Title: Xbox Disc-To-Digital Program Is Officially Live For Everyone Date: Wed, 30 Sep 2026 15:10:40 +0000 Link: https://www.gamespot.com/articles/xbox-disc-to-digital-program-is-officially-live-for-everyone/ Following an initial rollout to Xbox Insiders, the Xbox disc-to-digital program is officially available for all Xbox One and Xbox Series X users. The program allows you to receive digital licenses for a whole bunch (but not all) of your physical Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S games, and Microsoft has outlined how it works and a pretty neat trick you can use. In order to claim your digital license for a supported Xbox game, all you need to do is put it into an Xbox console while you're signed in. You'll get a notification to let you know you've received a license. One cool thing is this can be an Xbox Series X or an Xbox One console, even if you're exclusively claiming Xbox Series X games. https://twitter.com/xbox/status/2105040959192916253?s=46 While the disc will also automatically start installing when you insert it, you can turn this feature off by going to the Profile & system section in the settings, then Devices & connections. You'll see an option for Disc and you can uncheck "Play disc automatically." This way, you can more quickly claim licenses in bulk. With a disc inserted using this method, you'll have to manually select the game card on the home screen, select it with the Menu button, and then claim the digital license. Once that's done, you just eject the game and move on to the next one. When you've finished the process, re-check that "Play disc automatically" box for whenever you get your next physical game to play. If your license isn't available to claim, there's a good chance the publisher doesn't support the program. Major companies like Square Enix and Ubisoft don't appear to support it yet, which could limit its usefulness for those who want to truly digitize their entire collection. Once you've claimed the digital license, you should still be able to lend the physical game to a friend, but they will then get the digital license. If they give the disc back to you, you'll receive the license back after re-inserting the game into your own system.
Title: Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse Has Its Fangs In Me Already, And Fangfully, There’s A Pre-Order Discount Date: Wed, 30 Sep 2026 15:00:19 +0000 Link: https://www.gamespot.com/articles/castlevania-belmonts-curse-has-its-fangs-in-me-already-and-fangfully-theres-a-pre-order-discount/ If I can credit any video game for helping me fall in love with some of the best indie games, it’s Dead Cells. The roguelite Metroidvania blend captured my interest and stole countless hours from me, so I chased that same feeling for years, trying other indies and learning to appreciate the world beyond the triple-A hits. With Evil Empire, a developer that helped create post-launch content for Dead Cells and was founded by developers from Motion Twin, taking on a modern take on Castlevania, I was all in. Even better, you can get it at a discount before it’s even available. At a glance, Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse looks strikingly familiar. It’s a side-scrolling Metroidvania that, in reality, doesn’t differ too much from Dead Cells or the original Castlevania games (where did you think the “-vania” part came from?). However, it’s a smooth, swift take on the series, with new protagonist Rose Belmont moving around like an acrobat. In familiar territory for the franchise, Rose is a vampire hunter, much like her father Trevor, and as the pair patrol the streets of Paris, they’re soon wrapped up in a sinister conspiracy. Much like her bloodline, Rose is skilled in combat, able to deal with a variety of creatures with ease. Her swiftness makes the combat, at least in the trailers, look fast, but with enough style that each attack lands with a flourish. As you defeat various bosses, they become sealed in Rose’s Tarot Cards, meaning you can use their own skills against the hordes of enemies you’ll face. The weapon of my enemy is my friend, I believe the saying goes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hisx60NSqtY Like previous games, and with Evil Empire’s Dead Cells expertise behind it, the long-running series’ latest entry will likely have plenty of levels to explore, secrets to uncover, and unique ways to traverse the world as you return to previously explored areas. That’s a staple of the genre, of course, and with the stunning design that the new game looks to deliver, I’m looking forward to hunting down vampires once again. Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse is already well-priced at its listed price, but right now, you can pre-order the game for just $22.49 / £18.73 at Fanatical, getting you a Steam key for 25% off. Considering the game is yet to be released, that’s a pretty solid deal, and all pre-orders also get the Alucard Style Costume as an additional bonus. Hopefully, I’ll see you in Paris for a spooky monster hunt in October. Disclosure: GameSpot and Fanatical are both owned by Fandom. This story was created in collaboration with Fanatical’s deals team.
Title: Turn Off The Lights And Play These 11 New Horror Games Releasing In October Date: Wed, 30 Sep 2026 15:00:00 +0000 Link: https://www.gamespot.com/articles/turn-off-the-lights-and-play-these-11-new-horror-games-releasing-in-october/ I'll take a new horror game any day of the year, but I love it when a studio releases one specifically in October. For a few years now, I've been highlighting the new horror games launching every October, and there's always an exciting handful thanks to the teams that feel as I do; Halloween season just feels so right for sinking into a new horror game. October 2026 is much like past iterations, with lots of new experiences ready to give you bad dreams. Below, you can check out a calendar of new horror games debuting over the next few weeks, along with highlights from earlier this year that you may have missed. Don't let the season pass you by. Turn off your lights, throw on a headset, and enjoy. Earlier 2026 favorites First, let's recap some standout horror games you may have overlooked earlier this year. Since it's horror season, I'd bet many, if not all, of these will be on sale soon. Destined to be the biggest horror game of the year is Resident Evil Requiem, Capcom's latest in a series that hasn't missed in many years. I'm far from the biggest Resident Evil fan in the world, but I also can't imagine ever skipping out on a new one. Reanimal was another early one this year, and if you like Little Nightmares, it's an absolute must-play, coming from the same team that made the first two games in that series.  2026 was finally the year I played Fatal Frame for more than a few minutes, and I ended up loving the remake of Fatal Frame 2. You don't need to have played the first one to enjoy this one; I can confirm.  Fans of World War Z should check out John Carpenter's Toxic Commando, a first-person zombie shooter built with WWZ's horde tech but wrapped up in B-movie vibes. I didn't love it, but it's good mindless fun if you can catch it on sale. Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake is one of the best surprises among 2026's horror games. My favorite zombie game from this year is actually No More Room In Hell 2, which doubles the size of a Left 4 Dead lobby but slows combat way down and makes it harder, giving it all a lovely Romero-movie vibe.  One of my favorites flying under the radar is The Mound: Call of Cthulhu, a co-op horror game that takes the general loop of Lethal Company, but instead of a "friendslop" kind of experience, it sets it in a more detailed (and hauntingly hallucinogenic) forest of monsters. Silent Hill: Townfall just came out and marks another great entry in a series that seems to be all the way back from the brink of irrelevance.  Halloween is the latest asymmetrical multiplayer horror game from the team behind several others like Predator: Hunting Grounds and Friday the 13th. It's a great time, though a bit comically janky, like these games tend to be. I haven't played them yet, so I can't recommend them myself, but I've also heard good things about The Sinking City 2, The Walking Dead: Streets of Survival, and Love Eternal. I'm going to check them out myself before the month is over. New horror games for October 2026  With those earlier highlights settled, here's what else may unsettle you this month.  End of Abyss - October 1 October wastes no time, as End of Abyss launches right when our virtual calendars turn over. Created by former Little Nightmares developers, End of Abyss is an isometric third-person shooter set in a dark sci-fi world where you explore a derelict ship after a disaster. I've played demos of it over the past few years, and the vibes have always felt strong. Play it on PC (exclusive to Epic Games Store), PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. Don't Fret - October 1 Even in a genre as frequently weird as horror, Don't Fret's premise is especially odd. In it, you play an anthropomorphized guitar exploring Harmonic Heights, a music school turned hellscape for instruments, apparently. I'm not knocking it. In fact, I'll surely be playing it. I appreciate the out-there story setup. Play it on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. Hellraiser: Revival - October 8 Clive Barker's grotesque horror series is the next to get turned into a video game. However, unlike so many others in that space, this is a single-player game. It tells a new story set after the movie but before modern day. Based on the demo I played, it feels like Resident Evil, but with a lot more nudity, which helps it stay true to the series. Play it on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch 2. Silver Pines - October 8 Silver Pines is the first one on this list I have no hands-on experience with, but looking at it suggests it's like a 2D metroidvania version of Alan Wake. There are shadowy creatures to fight, a Twin Peaks-y town to explore, and mysteries to uncover. I can be pretty picky about which metroidvanias I play, but this one easily makes the cut if it's going to be so reminiscent of one of my favorite games. Play it on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch, and Switch 2. Tenebris Somnia - October 16 Only one game on this list will look quite like this. Tenebris Somnia's unconventional art style combines retro 2D visuals with hard cuts to live-action scenes. Those scenes are so uncanny and bizarre that its small studio had to fend off accusations that it was made with generative AI. In actuality, the team said it's all been done by skilled human artists. The end result is a style that recalls a method used decades ago, with some eye-catching modern touches, too. Play it on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch 2. Blue Ridge Hunting - October 20 Created by Jade Meadows, a solo developer not even of legal drinking age yet, Blue Ridge Hunting is a co-op horror game where you and your friends gear up and hunt down cryptids in the Appalachia region. In trailers, you can see how it's inspired by Phasmophobia, with its crew quarters full of gear that you equip before heading out, and my hope is that it can be similarly terrifying. Play it on PC via Steam Early Access. Escape from Playtime - October 21 You may not have heard of Poppy Playtime, but I bet your kids and/or younger siblings have. In the vein of Five Nights at Freddy's, the Playtime series is a dark subversion of kid-centric entertainment. Escape from Playtime is essentially the franchise's "friendslop" installment, giving players a new way to explore that creepy universe. Play it on PC via Steam Early Access. Mimic - October 26 A few years ago, Alien Earth showrunner Noah Hawley told me how, in his mind, the Alien franchise has always been about the horror of our alien past and our robotic future flanking humanity from both sides. Mimic reminds me of that dichotomy. In this asymmetrical social-deduction game for up to 10 players, you'll need to evade both a killer android and a shape-shifting (and player-controlled) alien. Think Among Us but in first-person and with a lot more blood. Play it on PC via Steam Early Access. Night Plane - October 26 Job sims and horror have been attached at the hip for years now. I'm going to ignore the broader implications this trend has on society and just focus on Night Plane, a game where you work as a flight attendant and try to keep shape-shifting monsters left behind in the terminal. If you like the sound of that, the same studio released the similar Night Bus in 2024. Play it on PC. Remothered: Red Nun's Legacy - October 27 As we await this third installment in the Remothered series, I hope it's the one I fully immerse myself in. Past games in the third-person stealth-horror series have actually unsettled me, something that isn't very common after 30+ years of genre desensitization, but some janky bits in each have left me wanting. If Red Nun's Legacy can be the one to put it all together, I'll be thrilled to have it mess me up in a way the others only hinted at. Play it on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. Switch 2 version releases on December 3. Spooky Ride - October 29 Spooky Ride is least likely to haunt you of all those mentioned here, but only because it's not really trying to. It's another co-op game akin to Content Warning or REPO, but in this one, you and your pals are biking a baby Bigfoot back to their home, while trying not to upset them along the way. It looks like a great gateway horror experience if you want something horror-flavored but nothing too upsetting. Play it on PC. That's everything in this year's installment of GameSpot's horror calendar, though I dare say that's plenty anyway. Happy hauntings! 30 Best Horror Games To Play In The Dark In 2026 View Images
Title: End Of Abyss Commits A Metroidvania Cardinal Sin – Video Review Date: Wed, 30 Sep 2026 14:00:00 +0000 Link: https://www.gamespot.com/videos/end-of-abyss-commits-a-metroidvania-cardinal-sin-video-review/ I liked much of my time with Section 9's horror-themed debut, but definitely not all of it.
Title: End Of Abyss Commits A Metroidvania Cardinal Sin Date: Wed, 30 Sep 2026 14:00:00 +0000 Link: https://www.gamespot.com/reviews/end-of-abyss-review/ End of Abyss pulls from a lot of inspirations. It has the same texture to its creepy world as Little Nightmares, which makes sense, given the team at Section 9 Interactive includes some former creators of that series. It borrows a bit from soulslikes, with its towering bosses who pack a mean punch if you don't time your dodge-roll well. Its fixed camera angles are reminiscent of Resident Evil, especially when you can hear something monstrous in a room before you can see it.  First and foremost, it's a third-person metroidvania in which you shoot monsters, solve environmental puzzles, and regularly unlock upgrades that enhance exploration. Some of its best parts are staples of the genre, but due to a few flaws, including one that broke my trust, and some poor blending of these influences, it winds up being an inconsistent patchwork instead of an inspired amalgamation. In this 12- to 15-hour sci-fi horror story, you play Cel, a voiceless technician sent to investigate a facility that has gone dark for reasons unknown. Elsewhere in the third-person adventure, other characters try to help solve the mystery, each decked out in hazmat-like coveralls, as you reveal the massive facility floor by floor, section by section. You'll routinely unlock new items meant to send you backtracking to solve puzzles, uncover secrets, and ultimately beat the game. Of course, End of Abyss didn't invent this formula, but it uses it well, consistently giving me strong incentives to retrace my steps as I'd recall old routes I couldn't take until milestone moments in the story.  This tried-and-true mode of exploration is my favorite part of the game. It was a tantalizing prospect to fight through a tough area with the game's twin-stick shooting mechanics and survival-horror-like limited resources to uncover things like explosive charges that can destroy some weak walls and floors, or a grappling hook that can pull down previously inaccessible ladders, revealing huge new avenues to explore, including many optional areas. Most upgrades are only found in optional areas, so I always made the time to seek them out as I tried to stay ahead of the many punishing enemies shambling around most corridors. Physically, the explorable space is well-designed, often leaving me to chart much of the facility myself, with some valuable maps hidden off the main path that regularly rewarded my efforts with a full view of a given area. However, End of Abyss betrays its genre and the player alike with one particular area lacking in polish: those all-important maps sometimes lie to you. Due to an apparent bug, sometimes a door you've opened will still register as locked on the map, or a door for which you have the key won't remind you of that with the map icon the game uses to say, "Come back! You can open this one now."  These are visual bugs only. I could still open a door if I had the right key, even if the map didn't tell me I could, and some doors locked on the map were wide open when I got there. But it meant having to juggle two versions of the game's many intricate areas in my head at once: the world according to the map, and the world according to reality. It made my favorite part of End of Abyss more frustrating than it needed to be, with more than a few instances of this issue cropping up before I hit the credits. A patch for the game went out just before I faced the final boss, which scrubbed out some other issues I faced to the point that they're not even relevant to this review anymore, but the map problem remains for now.  As much as I loved exploring every inch of the world, finding hidden bosses and precious resources alike, these sometimes faulty maps are a cardinal sin for a metroidvania, a genre that relies on these in-game signals for players to immerse themselves in their labyrinthine worlds. Once I realized I couldn't always trust the map, navigating became more stressful than some of the boss battles. Though the map misled me at times, at least the world is gorgeous. End of Abyss's underground facility comes to life thanks to its awesome atmosphere and art direction. The midnight-blue color palette gives every inch of the space an eerie, unsettling feeling. Cel can often hardly see more than a few feet in front of her, and it's not long before she, and you as the player, will come to realize how unfortunate that can be. I love when a sci-fi story can still feel like a haunted house, and though End of Abyss' many kinds of enemies are usually closer to mutated zombies than ghosts, it's all enveloped in an air of disconcerting stillness that I adore. A few bosses are memorable, but several others are too similar to stand apart. When in combat, from a certain range, Cel's shots are mostly spot-on thanks to a soft auto-lock that assists you. Get too far away from an enemy, though, and targeting becomes more dependent on your manual aim, giving fights that classic horror thrill of missing shots you really needed to land. It's good tension, even if it can feel like some under-the-hood randomness is deciding your shots in a way I suspect may frustrate others. There's no shortage of body horror in this game, which pulls from sci-fi classics like Alien, Event Horizon, and The Thing in different ways. Most enemies, with their noodly organic masses spilling out of their heads, behave like mindless drones, running or stumbling toward you, then clawing at you, latching onto your face, or stinging you, so it quickly becomes tense trying to keep a safe distance from the enemies without losing the aim assist that dispatches them more efficiently.  Early on, every encounter felt like a tense fight for my life. My gun was underpowered and enemies were numerous and quick to close the gap between us, while the cramped quarters and fixed camera angles added purposeful friction. At times, I grew frustrated because of the game's soulslike inspirations. Some of that comes down to taste. I don't enjoy or, usually even play soulslikes because I don't have the interest in getting beaten by a single boss for long stretches of time, and a few times early on, that was my experience with End of Abyss. But around the halfway point, everything began to click. My guns were more plentiful and powerful, having unlocked a shotgun, rifle, and flamethrower--though none of them really compared favorably to my fully upgraded pistol with infinite ammo. I got much better at timing my dodges, and after a few early bosses gave me fits, I beat several later ones in one or two tries each. That's partly due to the game's satisfying power climb that ramps up the deeper you get into the story, though it's also true that most bosses don't offer much diversity when it comes to challenge. Most of them want to simply clobber you up close or from range, heaving a fleshy appendage at you with just a half-second's notice per attempt. Though each boss has its own look and a few have some unique gameplay wrinkles, several others hardly feel different from one another. Once you learn to take advantage of the dodge-roll's invincibility frames, you'll be just fine. Managing a pack of enemies, especially of different types, is often very hard early on. I went into End of Abyss expecting a tough horror game based on my previous hands-on sessions with the game, and though it is often difficult and the world is definitely horrific, I also came away feeling like the soulslike elements clash poorly with a horror game. The first time I'd enter a room and get swarmed by a specific onslaught of enemies, it was scary. But when I'd get to a restoration pod--a save point and stand-in for Dark Souls' bonfires--enemies would reset. That meant retreading my steps through areas, which, while exciting for their newly opened avenues and hidden upgrades, lost their scare factor when I encountered the same enemies doing the same things as before. There are only so many times the monster can jump out of the proverbial closet before someone sleeps through it unphased, you know?  As a result, I stopped seeing End of Abyss as a true survival-horror experience and started seeing it more as a darker, creepier Metroid. I like that conceptually, too, though if that's what it wants to be, a more reliable map system is crucial. Getting lost because of faulty in-game hints happened too often for a game so reliant on exploration as its key ingredient. This problem may be fixed by the time you get to it, so you might have a better time than I did.  There are only so many times the monster can jump out of the proverbial closet before someone sleeps through it unphased, you know?  Ultimately, my 13 hours with End of Abyss were inconsistent, with long stretches of excitement broken up by regular beats of annoyance. When I was rolling right along, finding major and minor upgrades, unlocking crucial shortcuts, and taking on hordes of enemies in nail-biting combat, I really loved it. But too often, the map misled me, some encounters lost their luster through repetition, and some early difficulty spikes left me flustered.  In one sense, the way End of Abyss pulls from so many different inspirations lends it much of its appeal. It's the rare sort of game where you could round up super-fans of Dark Souls, Resident Evil, and Metroid, and each of them might come away with something different they enjoyed. But even if a patch fixes my big issue with the map's reliability, it's this same blend of influences that hampers some parts, none more than the repetitive soulslike encounters that reduce its horror elements to mere aesthetics.

Title: Boots on the Ground: ‘WARDOGS’ Goes All Out on GeForce NOW at Early-Access Launch Date: Thu, 10 Sep 2026 13:00:18 +0000 Link: https://blogs.nvidia.com/blog/geforce-now-thursday-wardogs/ Gear up: The latest PC games and major updates are ready to play on GeForce NOW this week. WARDOGS drops onto the cloud at early-access launch, alongside the Valheim 1.0 Deep North update and Bus Simulator 27 — part of nine new titles joining the cloud. The newest PC releases can demand serious hardware, storage space and upgrade budgets. GeForce NOW puts GeForce RTX-powered performance in the cloud, so members can jump into the newest titles across supported devices without needing expensive PC upgrades to keep up. From a 100-player tactical firefight to a frozen Viking frontier and a growing bus empire, every adventure is ready when members are — no downloads or storage management required. Who Let the ‘WARDOGS’ Out?   Take on the Control Zone: WARDOGS launches on GeForce NOW today, bringing BULKHEAD’s large-scale tactical first-person shooter to the cloud at early-access launch. Up to 100 players across three teams battle to control randomized zones in a large-scale military sandbox, where tactical gunplay, combined-arms combat, building and destruction can change the course of a match. There’s no single route to victory. Outfit a loadout, coordinate a squad, fortify a strategic position or take the fight to the enemy in vehicles. Every team play action earns cash, giving players more ways to invest in gear and vehicles that can turn the tide. Ultimate members can stream the fight with GeForce RTX 5080-class performance in the cloud for a tactical advantage. Pick up the battle across supported devices without waiting on a huge game install or clearing local storage first. Ice, Ice in the Deep North, Baby Sharpen the axes and raise the shields – Valheim has left early access with its 1.0 update, letting members stream the final biome in Iron Gate’s Viking survival saga through Steam and Xbox Store.  Set sail for the Deep North, a frozen frontier filled with new enemies to face, weapons to craft and strongholds to build before the cold closes in. The 1.0 launch also arrives alongside new platform versions with full crossplay support, making it easier to rally the clan. Whether returning to a long-running world on a PC or Mac or beginning a fresh voyage on a Steam Deck or Amazon Fire TV Stick, members can head to the Deep North across supported devices without waiting for downloads. The Wheels on the Bus Go ‘Round in the Cloud The route to the top starts here. Hop into the driver’s seat. Bus Simulator 27 is now streaming from GeForce NOW.  Drive a fleet of more than 45 officially licensed buses from 13 manufacturers through Felicia Bay, a sunny region with two cities, 20 districts and a full day-and-night cycle. Build routes, manage timetables and grow a successful bus company in Story, Career or Sandbox mode. Title: GeForce NOW Gives Gamers More Ways to Play at Gamescom 2026 Date: Thu, 27 Aug 2026 13:00:33 +0000 Link: https://blogs.nvidia.com/blog/geforce-now-thursday-gamescom-2026/ NVIDIA’s Gamescom announcements are revealing what’s next for GeForce NOW, with new ways to play, more supported devices and platforms, and even more big PC games headed to the cloud. New NVIDIA DLSS 4.5 technology controls give members more ways to fine-tune gameplay, while expanded support for new Steam devices, GOG single sign-on, Firefox browser support and more Amazon Fire TV devices continue broadening where and how GeForce RTX-powered PC gaming can be enjoyed. Gamescom is also bringing a blockbuster lineup of PC games to GeForce NOW. CONTROL Resonant, Gears of War: E-Day, Onimusha: Way of the Sword, The Blood of Dawnwalker and STAR WARS Zero Company are all coming to the cloud at launch.  For a limited time, members can also get CONTROL Resonant with the purchase of a 12-month GeForce NOW Ultimate membership. The Gamescom extras don’t stop there. To celebrate, GeForce NOW is giving away more than 40 prizes in our Community Giveaway — including gaming hardware and GeForce NOW Ultimate memberships. There’s even more fun to come. Check out the list of 13 games joining the GeForce NOW library this week. Next-Level Cloud Gaming More ways to choose how to play. This fall, GeForce NOW is introducing new NVIDIA DLSS 4.5 controls in the cloud, giving Ultimate members more choice over how supported games look and perform, even without the latest hardware. Powered by NVIDIA RTX graphics, each control offers something different: DLSS Super Resolution sharpens image quality, while Dynamic Frame Generation delivers lower latency and stutter for smoother streaming, and Ray Reconstruction enhances ray-traced visuals. Together, these technologies make it easier to tune supported games for image quality, responsiveness or a preferred balance between the two.  Stay tuned to GFN Thursdays for details about best practices for enabling DLSS 4.5 overrides and how Dynamic Frame Generation can help Ultimate members enable more graphic settings while still getting smooth streaming. Stream full steam ahead with the Steam ecosystem. GeForce NOW is also adding community-requested support for Steam Machine with Steam Controller later this fall, and later for Windows and macOS, delivering more ways to play and making it even easier for longtime Steam players to jump into the cloud using familiar hardware. The additions build on existing Steam Deck support and expand compatibility across the Steam ecosystem. Get your GOG on with one click into the library. Launching GOG games just got even easier. With GOG single sign-on now available on GeForce NOW, members can securely link their account once, automatically sync supported games and launch them without having to sign in to GOG again — all with a single click. With fewer steps between opening the app, skipping any downloads and jumping into gameplay, it’s another way GeForce NOW continues streamlining access to PC gaming libraries, making it easier to play the GOG library of games on TV platforms since gamers are automatically logged into their GOG accounts. Find popular titles, like Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt, in the app in the dedicated GOG row. Or search and filter for GOG games, then jump into supported titles from almost anywhere — all streamed from the cloud. Check back on GFN Thursdays for the latest games joining the GeForce NOW library, including newly supported games streaming from GOG. Outfox nearly any device with GeForce RTX gaming. Plus, GeForce NOW is now officially supported on Firefox, expanding browser access across all major Windows browsers. Members can jump into supported PC games directly from Firefox without downloading a dedicated app. Ultimate members can enjoy GeForce RTX-powered gaming at up to 1440p and 120 frames per second. Simply download the latest version of Firefox and visit play.geforcenow.com to get started. The cloud handles downloads, installs and updates, keeping local storage free while games stay ready to play in the cloud.  Bring the fire to living rooms with GeForce NOW. GeForce NOW is expanding support to additional Amazon Fire TV devices. GeForce NOW first launched on Fire TV devices earlier this year, and will soon expand to the Fire TV Stick 4K Select, a 4K streaming stick that’s ready to game right out of the box. Streaming from the cloud means supported PC games are ready to play using a compatible controller, making it easy to enjoy GeForce NOW on the biggest screen in the house with even more options to play from the comfort of the couch.  And that’s not all the awesomeness from Amazon. Later this year, Fire TV users will be able to purchase GeForce NOW memberships directly through Amazon, creating a more seamless path from device setup to gameplay. These new features will arrive alongside some of the biggest games coming to the cloud throughout the year. Get Ready for Launch Five newly announced and highly anticipated games are coming to GeForce NOW at launch: CONTROL Resonant, Gears of War: E-Day, Onimusha: Way of the Sword, The Blood of Dawnwalker and STAR WARS Zero Company.  Better yet, members can lock in one of them early: For a limited time, purchase a 12-month GeForce NOW Ultimate membership and receive CONTROL Resonant at launch at no additional cost, and be first to experience Faden’s next chapter. The offer is available Tuesday, Aug. 25, through Sunday, Sept. 27. Ultimate members can stream the full lineup with GeForce RTX 5080-class performance in the cloud, including NVIDIA DLSS 4, ray tracing, NVIDIA Reflex and Cinematic Quality Streaming technologies, with up to 5K high dynamic range on supported devices.  Whether diving into new worlds or returning to iconic franchises, GeForce NOW lets members skip expensive hardware upgrades, massive installs and storage management so they can jump straight into the action the moment each game launches. Title: How Control Resonant’s art design and tech shaped its bosses, paranaturally-twisted Manhattan and more Date: Tue, 29 Sep 2026 13:00:09 +0000 Link: https://blog.playstation.com/2026/09/29/how-control-resonants-art-design-and-tech-shaped-its-bosses-paranaturally-twisted-manhattan-and-more/ With its gravity-defying set pieces, memorable boss fights, and decidedly different take on Manhattan, Control Resonant, released last week, is staking its claim to be one of 2026’s big hitters on PlayStation 5. I had the chance to talk to Lead Level Designer Anne-Marie Grönroos, Art Director Elmeri Raitanen, and Lead Gameplay Designer Sergey Mohov to dig into the inspiration behind the striking art direction and design of the sequel’s characters and environments. Designing Dylan Games featuring super-heroic protagonists are all about fulfilling the ‘power fantasy’ of transporting us away from our day-to-day lives. But this is the world of Control. And sure, Dylan lets us rise – quite literally – above the norm, but there’s a reason why Remedy often illustrates his very human clumsiness. “There is a deliberate groundedness in how Dylan moves and fights,” explains Elmeri. “We wanted to show that everything has a cost.” “When he uses Reach, he’s just kind of swept off his feet” – Sergey Sergey expanded: “Dylan’s animations demonstrate that everything he does is difficult. It takes effort to use the Elevate ability, and shifting gravity is disorienting to him.” So while we don’t know what it’s like to run at super speed or levitate, we do know what it’s like to stumble or fall over, and when Dylan does this, we empathise and connect with him. “That’s a big part of one of the themes of the game,” says Sergey. “Somebody can be really powerful, but at the same time yearning for human connection and trying to learn how to interact with others.” Mapping out ‘Strange York’ Similar to how Dylan’s animations and design affects how the player feels controlling him, Dylan’s actions topple, break, and buckle the expansive world around him for a reason. “In Control, dynamic destruction and reactive environments played a huge part of the second-to-second gameplay loop, making combat feel visceral and rewarding,” explains Elmeri. “In Resonant we wanted to retain that even on a larger stage, so when you slam the ground or create a shockwave, leaves kick up from the street, fire hydrants start spraying water, and trashcans spew litter.” With the larger environment to play in, Remedy had the challenge of matching the expectations set by Control’s confined, Brutalist inspired design with the openness of a brutalised Manhattan, offering a contrast between familiarity and freedom. “A new paranatural threat in the Patterning gave us the opportunity for unexpected and crazy visuals,” says Elmeri. “The Federal Bureau of Control (FBC), at face value, looks like a believable office space. Then when something otherworldly happens, it feels impactful because we had first established a baseline for the story.” “The more mundane areas can also act as a palate cleanser,” says Anne-Marie. “They keep the more paranatural areas surprising. It’s also why we placed the most normal zone, The Central, in the middle of the game world where it creates a baseline of the normal New York. Familiarity with the real-world environments creates contrast, and makes the paranatural stand out even more.” “It was also a challenge to use a real world location,” explains Sergey. “For example, in the real New York the last phone booth was removed around 2022. But we have them in the Remedy universe New York. It’s not meant to be a one to one representation of real life. It is what we call ‘Strange York’, an iconic movie-like retro version.” When it came to other items placed in ‘Strange York’, Remedy followed a particular design ethos. “Most concepts for objects around the environment started with an intended gameplay purpose and an idea of what that object is used for diegetically,” says Anne-Marie. “Or it could also be used to draw the player’s attention, like the FBC satellite dishes around many of the Fast Travel doors, or the deflated FBC balloons near the map towers – in which case it can be up to the concept artist to come up with a reasonable in-world function and backstory. The gameplay function can also evolve based on the concept, and sometimes things need to be added to the concept to address player feedback.” Designing the Gap One of the greatest contrasts comes from The Gap, a stark, grey and otherworldly representation of Dylan’s psyche. “There was a lot of exploration about how to convey the Gap,” says Sergey. “We took inspiration from film and iconic locations, even something like The Truman Show where Truman reaches the end of the world and there’s just a door in the sky. Dylan has spent all this time in a concrete building, locked up and experimented on, and that’s what is most familiar to him. Which is why the Gap visually represents that.” The Gap is the raw, honest concrete Dylan has felt under his bare feet during captivity.” – Elmeri Diving into the Sinkhole Another striking visual part of Control Resonant comes from its Sinkhole mission, where Dylan fights enemies across floors, walls, and ceilings in a gravity warped apartment building. “It started as a prototype to test how it would feel underneath the city through increasingly strange, twisted environments,” says Anne-Marie. “Deep sea exploration and cave diving were some of the inspirations, along with different underground themes, like subway tunnels. Some of those ideas ended up being used in The Subway Fault instead. “We hadn’t yet nailed down the rules of the gravity shifting back then, and didn’t know how big of a part that would play later, but when we set the rule that everything that looks like a walkable surface should be a walkable surface, gravity shifting completely changed how certain areas were played.” “It was quite disorienting to work on,” reveals Sergey. “But it allowed us to focus the player on what was in front of them and create some really cool combat encounters and traversal challenges.” The origin of the Resonants When it came to boss fights, Remedy intended them to be ‘skill checks’ for the player – but their overall creation was a complex alchemy of development talent. “We asked the full team to send their ideas for bosses to us,” reveals Sergey. “We then picked what would best fit the specific kind of player experience that we wanted from a specific boss, and developed it further. “The Deserter boss is in a transformed factory environment specifically built to house it.” – Sergey “We then built the prototype for each, and assessed the size and shape of the space that this creature needed to be in. Then we would describe its behavior in a technical specification document. The iterated version would go to the concept artists who would work with the writers to figure out the visuals and space; how they fit the environment, the theme of the zone, and their identity.” “Each Resonant boss was built on a theme, like controlling people inspired by mycelium or a hive mind,” says Elmeri. “We wanted to evoke awe in the player and create a sense of the majestic or divine. So we referenced a lot of medieval iconography and church architecture.” Harnessing the power of PS5 “From the very beginning of development we wanted to evolve the game to be more player-driven in terms of exploration, progression, and narrative,” explains Sergey. “It definitely helps to have a powerful system because even though people loved the relatively confined spaces of Control, we wanted to open it up. “We wanted bigger draw distances, more physics objects, and more enemies on screen. It’s definitely Remedy’s biggest game – I think one zone in Resonance is larger than any of the other zones in our previous games.” The opportunities afforded by PS5 also extended to Control Resonant’s extensive use of the DualSense Controller’s features, such as listening to radio calls via its built-in speaker, and getting feedback from specific abilities on the Adaptive Triggers. “Getting that feeling of resistance and an extra click contributes a great deal to making the abilities feel more powerful,” explains Sergey. “And that’s important in things like combat, so you don’t have to look at Dylan’s interface; you can just feel your way through instead.” Want to see all of this hard work in its final form, and experience it for yourself? Control Resonant is available now on PS5.

Title: Suri: The Seventh Note launches Oct 30 on PS5 Date: Mon, 28 Sep 2026 13:06:18 +0000 Link: https://blog.playstation.com/2026/09/28/suri-the-seventh-note-launches-oct-30-on-ps5/ After four years of development, we’re ecstatic to reveal that our debut game, Suri: The Seventh Note will finally be available from October 30, 2026 on PS5. Every environment, character, and animation has been meticulously illustrated to create a distinctive visual identity. The island itself draws inspiration from the rich artistic and architectural traditions of India, blending influences from Rajput forts, Theyyam Culture, Himalayan monasteries, and diverse regional cultures into a vibrant fantasy world that feels both familiar and original. Play Video Whether you’re chasing perfect runs, uncovering hidden paths, mastering every movement ability, or simply taking in the world around you, Suri brings together gameplay, music, and culture in a world built to be explored. While this would be obvious to some from the onset, there’s just as much thought (if not more) that’s gone into Suri’s music. Stay awhile and listen (to master) Instrumental in our journey was to make music not just something you heard, but something you mastered.  Eighty percent of the music you hear in the game has been recorded with original analogue instruments rather than something synthesised electronically. This is because we wanted to preserve the texture of the music. Through our trailers you’ll notice a layered medley of instruments in-line with what you’d expect from various regions of India. Indian music inspirations So when the player arrives in the southern part of the island of Suri, we’d use a veena instead of a sitar, for instance. And then when we go to the desert portions of the game, we look to Rajasthan and its musical traditions. Along with an intense focus on audio variety came an interesting constraint to solve. How do we adapt musical variety to the speed at which human thumbs can move on a controller?  This ended up being the craziest and most important concern that we had. And it was quite challenging too because we have to work around certain restrictions. For example, there needs to be a minimum time window for the player actions to happen. 480 milliseconds to slay the beat After a lot of trial and error, we found the sweet spot: for us, it’s around 480 milliseconds, so we need to maintain a gap of 480 milliseconds between the main beats of the game. When making a game like this, a major restriction is that we can’t follow any one pure genre in particular because it won’t always work with the gameplay. So we have to create a hybrid of genres and styles.  Why the world of Suri revolves around 480 milliseconds We chose 480 milliseconds between the main consecutive beats to create enough space for the player’s input response while still maintaining the game’s momentum. This timing allows us to accommodate the fail window around the player’s response without making the interaction feel slow or disconnected. A longer window could disrupt the spacing, rhythm, and overall mood of the experience, making the game feel less responsive. On the other hand, a shorter window may make the fail state too subtle or quick for the player to consciously or subconsciously recognize that they have fallen off rhythm. The 480 ms interval therefore provides a balance between responsiveness, rhythmic clarity, and gameplay momentum. Inventing our own music genre Take for example the Indian aesthetics; we can’t have very authentic Indian music in the game because of the sort of rhythms and timing required, but we can utilise it with the cutscenes and narration drawings. The music is very bouncy and not aggressive in nature. And also, we’ve decluttered a lot of the sounds and brought the essential and functional beats up top. Essentially we’ve taken a hip-hop-like structure and laid Indian textures (Indian percussion instruments) over it.  Pre-order now Suri: The Seventh Note launches on October 30, 2026, and you can pre-order the game now on PlayStation 5. Built with the PlayStation India Hero Project Suri: The Seventh Note is proud to be part of the PlayStation India Hero Project. Working closely with the PlayStation team has helped us bring our vision to life, particularly while developing our Rhythm Haptics Engine and ensuring that Suri feels right at home on PS5. Their support throughout development has been invaluable, and we’re incredibly excited to finally share what we’ve been building with players around the world. Title: The importance of being earnest: How Marvel Tōkon's Deadpool trades ridicule for fighting game reverence Date: Wed, 30 Sep 2026 15:00:12 +0000 Link: https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/the-importance-of-being-earnest-how-marvel-tokons-deadpool-trades-ridicule-for-fighting-game-reverence Deadpool’s a weird character. Like fellow mutant Wolverine, Wade Wilson is a trained killer whose primary superpower is a healing factor that lets him recover and reform from any wound, even if bisected or decapitated. Unlike Wolverine, Wade knows he’s in a fictional medium, be it a comic book, movie, or game, and physically can’t stop quipping about that fact and referencing things in and out of his world. It’s up to the writer whether this is sheer coincidence (as in, he’s genuinely just psychotic and his insane ramblings happen to be the truth), or a true meta awareness granting him power over narrative itself. This is a trait that Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls handles smartly, which in a way is surprising, because it usually makes him quite annoying. In most appearances, Deadpool references everything — nothing is safe. Marvel editorial, art of all mediums new and old, assorted real-life celebrity drama, specific stories from comics’ past (not just Marvel, either), and more I can’t think of right now; all of it ripe fruit for Wade to riff on in one of the many jokes-per-minute spouting from his scarred mouth. This became true of the vast majority of his comic runs, once the meta awareness, fourth-wall-breaking became a central part of his character identity, and defined non-comic appearances like High Moon’s 2013 Deadpool game and Ryan Reynolds' (admittedly, kinda perfect) portrayal from the 2016 film onwards. No, X-Men Origins: Wolverine does not count. Read more
Title: Crimson Desert's first expansion, Charting the Unknown, delayed so Pearl Abyss get more time to polish and stabilise the red pudding Date: Wed, 30 Sep 2026 14:30:00 +0000 Link: https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/crimson-deserts-first-expansion-charting-the-unknown-delayed-so-pearl-abyss-get-more-time-to-polish-and-stabilise-the-red-pudding A little bit of extra waiting is in order for Crimson Desert's first proper expansion, Charting the Unknown. Originally set to arrive midway through October, it's now been moved back by a couple of weeks to allow for some extra fine-tuning of the thousand or so funky open world activities devs Pearl Abyss have jammed into it. Title: Come play the flute and reshape the very earth in Songs of Glimmerwick, a magic school RPG from the creators of Eastshade Date: Wed, 30 Sep 2026 14:00:00 +0000 Link: https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/come-play-the-flute-and-reshape-the-very-earth-in-songs-of-glimmerwick-a-magic-school-rpg-from-the-creators-of-eastshade It has perhaps never been easier to join a witch or wizard school without being a Guy Who Rhymes With Bally Trotter. Academies of the occult abound in videogames. True, there has yet to be an amazing Little Witch Academia adaptation, and I'm still waiting for that Arbitrary Metric take on Naomi Novik's A Deadly Education, to say nothing of Failbetter's take on Terry Pratchett's Equal Rites, but in the short term, I've been enjoying the demo for Songs of Glimmerwick, which goes on sale today. Title: Crusader Kings 3's By God Alone expansion offers plenty of holy hijinks, even if your polyamorous Pope doesn't get divorced three times in one day Date: Wed, 30 Sep 2026 13:27:57 +0000 Link: https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/crusader-kings-3s-by-god-alone-expansion-offers-plenty-of-holy-hijinks-even-if-your-polyamorous-pope-doesnt-get-divorced-three-times-in-one-day My very soul has been cleft into pieces on this day. January 3rd, 902 AD. First, my Christian faith fractured in twain. I stand in Rome, head of the Roman Rite and now the leader of the Catholic world. My neighbours to the east have chosen to walk a different path, transforming their Greek Rite into a new Orthodoxy followed by the Byzantine Empire. It’s a brave new world in Crusader Kings 3’s By God Alone expansion, made even tougher to face by the three additional wounds I gained right at the moment of the split. All three of my wives have divorced me, serving their papers within seconds of each other. Taken alongside the betrothal that my fourth wife-to-be broke not too long before the schism, it really stings. Sure, I’m the Pope and thus should be celibately devoting myself to God, but a breakup’s a breakup. It’s not all consecrated bread and wine when you’ve managed to end up on Wikipedia’s list of sexually active popes thanks to an utterly hilarious bug. Read more
Title: "Ultimately, we asked 'why are we doing this?'": the creators of Arc Raiders wildly underestimated how hard it is to make a live service game Date: Wed, 30 Sep 2026 12:15:00 +0000 Link: https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/ultimately-we-asked-why-are-we-doing-this-the-creators-of-arc-raiders-wildly-underestimated-how-hard-it-is-to-make-a-live-service-game Arc Raiders developers Embark heavily underestimated the challenges of creating a full-blown live service game, executive producer Aleksander Grøndal has conceded in a new interview. The extraction shooter launched with an ambition for monthly post-release updates that ultimately proved untenable, resulting in an exhausted and unhappy team who were "constantly overshooting our capacity".
