The anticipated sequel in the open-world driving game series doesn’t officially launch until May 19, but owners of its most expensive version - the Premium Edition - can play it right now. Read more

Title: GTA 6 Preorders Alone Could Pay For Production Budget – Expert Date: Thu, 13 Aug 2026 15:56:09 +0000 Link: https://www.gamespot.com/articles/gta-6-preorders-alone-could-pay-for-production-budget-expert/ GTA 6 preorders began in late June, and, as expected, there was enormous demand for the game. Take-Two said GTA 6 had unprecedented preorder numbers, but the company is not disclosing a specific figure to avoid misleading investors. Sensor Tower, a research and analytics company for gaming, is, however, estimating where they may land. Karl Kontus, the SVP and GM of video game insights at Sensor Tower, told GI.biz that preorders for GTA 6 could be in the area of 25 million when the game releases, which would amount to "unprecedented preorder performance." Kontus said 25 million preorders would work out to around $2 billion in revenue. That would cover GTA 6's development cost and the majority of marketing spend, he estimated. To be sure, Rockstar has not disclosed a production or marketing budget for GTA 6, but the game was no doubt very costly to produce. The analyst pointed out that GTA 6's proper marketing campaign has not begun yet--fans can expect it to kick off with the August 27 trailer on Netflix. Kontus said the majority of preorders for GTA 6 will come in the last week or so before launch. Kontus went on to say that while early preorder data may skew toward the game's $100 edition, as Take-Two boss Strauss Zelnick recently said, the final figures may be closer to 50/50 between the $80 and $100 editions. The analyst also discussed how Take-Two and Rockstar were smart to pack the $100 Ultimate Edition with a lot of exclusive items to encourage people to spend more. "Sometimes the premium SKUs are just filler content to justify a higher price, but the GTA 6 premium SKU comes with a meaningful amount of vehicles, weapons, and even a custom mod shop that you wouldn't get otherwise," Kontus said. "For a lot of people, this is the one 'must-buy' game this year, and they will want to make the most of it. I'm actually kind of surprised they didn't do a $150 SKU – feels like money left on the table (but also fewer players being angry as a result)." GTA 6 launches on November 19 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. It’s expected to be 2026’s biggest game, and it could get another jolt when the next evolution of GTA Online launches.
Title: New Krispy Kreme Pokemon Doughnuts Announced, And You’re Gonna Wanna Eat ‘Em All Date: Thu, 13 Aug 2026 15:42:17 +0000 Link: https://www.gamespot.com/articles/new-krispy-kreme-pokemon-doughnuts-announced-and-youre-gonna-wanna-eat-em-all/ Starting next week, it's going to be totally acceptable to eat Pokemon. That's because Krispy Kreme on August 18 will launch a limited-time Pokemon Doughnut Collection, featuring tasty-looking pastries based on five beloved pocket monsters.  You can take a bite of a Pikachu doughnut, filled with lemon creme and topped with "electrifying drizzle" as well as a Pikachu piece. Meanwhile, there's a Charmander doughnut containing a chocolate and toasted marshmallow filling. Other options include original glazed doughnuts but customized for Bulbasaur, Squirtle, Jigglypuff, and even the Poke Ball. A special-edition dozen looks to retail for about $21 in the US.  The collaboration doesn't stop there, either. For starters, Krispy Kreme says that anyone who wears Pokemon threads to one of its locations on August 22 will receive a free basic glazed doughnut. There will also be five different Pokemon cups to collect, with each one housing 10 glazed gold dots.  Hilariously enough, you can actually preorder the Pokemon doughnuts right now from Krispy Kreme's website. The Pokemon cups are going for about $8, or you can bundle one of those with the dozen collection for around $29. That's not really offering any additional savings, though.  By the way, this isn't the first Pokemon food collaboration of the year. Target has Pokemon Pop-Tarts available, which originally came out back in 2000. The original anime also strongly hinted that people ate Pokemon. Last month, a sex toy shop launched unofficial items like the Bulbypulse to help you Pokemoan.  25 Pokemon That, Frankly, Look Delicious View Images

Title: Wolverine Uses Blind Rage And Violence To Make Combat Feel Authentic Date: Thu, 13 Aug 2026 15:00:00 +0000 Link: https://www.gamespot.com/articles/wolverine-uses-blind-rage-and-violence-to-make-combat-feel-authentic/ It'd be inaccurate to say the X-Men are having a resurgence, given that the team's escapades are perennially popular stories in comics. However, between Marvel Tokon, Avengers: Doomsday, and X-Men '97, the X-Men are certainly having a pop-culture moment. Also in the zeitgeist mix is Marvel's Wolverine, a PlayStation 5-exclusive title developed by Insomniac Games. I played a couple of hours of Wolverine and was shocked to see just how much of what I experienced lines up with the current X-Men media landscape. Wolverine takes place on Earth-1048--the same universe as Insomniac's Spider-Man games--and opens with an assault on a Weapon X base, where Wolverine teams up with his longtime hater Sabertooth. I played through this just days after watching them both do the same thing in X-Men '97. A foolhardy mission featuring Wolverine is a pretty common narrative beat in Logan's story, irrespective of format, but that sense of fortuitously timed familiarity became a feeling that permeated much of what I saw and played of Wolverine.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B5UuhXW32JI Wolverine is the latest in a type of game that PlayStation has become known for: a mostly linear action game that is narrative-driven and uses introspection, self-discovery, and personal growth as a theme for character development. Having spent ample time with the recent God of Wars, The Last of Us-es, Ghost of Tsushimas, Horizons and, of course, multiple Spider-Men, what I played wasn't remarkable for its unique ideas, but nevertheless made a good impression in the way it was executed. I'm neither surprised nor upset that Insomniac is sticking close to that template, as it happens to work very well for Wolverine. In this universe, Logan has lived a life spanning hundreds of years. He's been through hell (figuratively), his memory is broken, and since the X-Men team hasn't been established in this particular continuity yet, he's mostly a loner. This is a compelling starting point for the kind of tame-the-beast-within tale that packs a big punch when it comes to the character.  Though Wolverine may be a game made from familiar pieces, Insomniac is putting them together in surprising ways. This became apparent from the intro, where a calm, wizened figure finds a feral Logan hiding in the wild and extends a helping hand. If you thought that person was Charles Xavier, founder of the X-Men, you'd be wrong. This time it's Nathaniel Essex, the X-Men antagonist who will become known as Mister Sinister.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eQgbnQmYmGo By subverting expectations, Wolverine (the game, not the person) establishes tension and sparks intrigue, and I began thinking about Essex's inevitable turn and what could potentially trigger a schism between him and Logan. That event, it turned out, became clearer a few hours into the demo, but my immediate task was to team up with Sabertooth and Mystique. Team X, as the trio is known, was put together by Essex and seemingly disbanded, but has come together once again to find and rescue Essex from the clutches of lunatic human supremacist Bolivar Trask.  Let's get the easy part out of the way: Insomniac isn't pulling any punches and has unleashed a Wolverine that savagely tears through his enemies with his iconic adamantium claws. In fact, the gameplay has actually been designed to encourage brutality so that the violence, along with being true to the character and feeling very satisfying, also feeds into the narrative.  This, for me, is the most interesting part of the game thus far. Fundamentally, the mechanics of combat are the same we've seen for years now: light attacks, heavy attacks, a timing-based parry, and dodges to create openings. And, like in similar action-oriented superhero games, you can develop all of these mechanics by unlocking new skills or enhance them by unlocking passive perks, which the game calls "Adaptations." It's all the essential building blocks of the freeflow combat system popularized by Rocksteady's Batman: Arkham games and are now used in pretty much every game that has melee fighting in it. But what stuck with me was the sense of momentum that slowly builds as Wolverine lays waste to enemies, how that feeds into Logan's mental state, and how the player becomes an active participant in that mind-body connection.  Although Logan doesn't know who he is anymore, he has an acute awareness that inside him is something monstrous fighting to be let loose, which scares him. In the thick of combat, that push-and-pull struggle manifests as a meter that represents his rage. Although Logan has his healing factor, he still feels pain and can be injured. Rage, which is split into segments, begins as a way of recovering health. But the longer the violence goes on, the more Logan's Rage meter builds, and the more aggressive Logan becomes.  For the player, that creates a satisfying combat loop that, smartly, is in lockstep with Logan's escalating on-screen emotions. The demands and the precision required of the player to take out waves of Trask's goons changes as he gets more and more enraged, until there's a kind of parity between the player's input and Logan's blind rage and indiscriminate killing.  Wolverine's opening salvo usually begins with a leap that closes the gap between himself and the enemy. With his claws out, he plunges into his target, and launches into a series of quick attacks that can be ended with a more powerful one. It's a ruthless dance of back-and-forth that requires directing Wolverine towards the most imminent threats, be they a soldier firing a gun from long range or one using a shield to take the sting out of his attacks. In one situation, Wolverine is lured into a room that takes away his healing factor, which means the player also needs to juggle taking out the devices suppressing his mutant abilities on top of the dangerous foes surrounding him. As the Rage built up, I initially used a heavy finisher where Wolverine impales enemies on his claws and, by doing so, recovers health. This pairing of attacking until a bar of Rage is available to heal and then repeating is very effective. However, by mixing in special techniques like Tornado Spin, which sees Wolverine spin with his claws out to control the crowd of fodder, it becomes easier to maintain Rage and continue building toward increasing the meter to its third level.  About the same time that I reached level two, I found that the game was usually trying to overwhelm me with enemies, which pushed me to make quicker decisions in target prioritization, while also parrying and dodging, leaping to targets, attacking them, and moving on. This felt like an intentional ratcheting up of pressure specifically designed to make the eventual payoff feel intoxicating. And it worked very well. At level-two Rage, I was cutting through Trask's soldiers like they were made of butter; watching as the world around me was showered in blood and a grunting Logan leaped from one enemy to the next, claws out, shredding everything in his path. A few counters and a whole lot of eviscerated baddies later, Wolverine's Rage reached level three. At max level, Wolverine can launch into a berserker frenzy. This sees him essentially losing some degree of control as he's driven by pure, animalistic instinct. The world loses its color, desaturating into black and white, and the sound of the musical score becomes muted, drowned out by Wolverine's heavy breathing and snarls, and the snikt of his claws as they slice through bodies and the environment around him. Crucially, the player's inputs simplify to just hitting two trigger buttons to viciously maul anyone in his path, instantly killing them.  That process no doubt sounds pretty ordinary on paper. But I'd be lying if I didn't admit that the synergy between the various systems building into a big, violent payoff put a smile on my face. It's one of the ideas that Insomniac has implemented to bring authenticity to the character, in the same way that exhilarating web-swinging, mid-air pirouettes, and impromptu backflips were how the studio realized the fantasy of being Spider-Man. There's a level of satisfaction that comes from that sudden shift from carefully timed strikes and evasive maneuvers to repeatedly hammering two buttons to obliterate everyone and everything that embodies Wolverine and his anger so well. But it was also a release for me, too. Like Logan, I was able to throw out the need to think about what I was doing and give in to effortless and mindless killing.  In this berserker state, continuing to attack and kill adds to his Rage meter, which means it's possible to stay in that mode for extended periods of time, making the crash all the more effective when the berserker state ends and sights and sounds of the world come rushing back, leaving Wolverine and the player to deal with the death and destruction they wrought together. It's a very neat trick that, for the couple of hours I played, never got old. Whether the transition remains as effective over multiple hours remains to be seen, but I suspect that being able to unlock new techniques and Adaptations will help keep things fresh. The satisfaction of combat is what I left thinking most about, but there are a number of other noteworthy elements that I'm eager to experience more of. As mentioned, Nathaniel Essex's arc from idealist to lunatic is a major one. During my session, I reached the point where cracks started to form in his relationship with Logan, as Essex started to descend into his own kind of savagery. But there are also numerous other characters and relationships that are similarly intriguing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P6cSbKIwGWQ This is one of the few instances of non-comic-book X-Men material choosing to explore Mystique beyond the usefulness of her shapeshifting abilities in subterfuge. She's actually the cooler head on Team X and often has to keep Wolverine and Sabertooth on-task. She's depicted as smart, level-headed, and very much in love with Tyger. That's a part of the character we haven't seen much of on-screen. Similarly, there's nuance in the way Sabertooth is depicted. Although he's constantly giving Wolverine grief and goading him, it's clear that he sees him as a kindred spirit and, though he never admits it, the closest thing he has to family.  That means that, when the cracks in Team X start to form, Sabertooth takes it very poorly, lashing out at Logan. Jean Grey is on the run, trying to help fellow mutants while evading capture. As outcasts, Logan and Jean start to build a relationship that brings out the vulnerabilities in both of them. And, surprisingly, my time with the game ended with the introduction of The Hand, a criminal organization that usually shows up in Daredevil's stories, but are a big part of Spider-Man: Brand New Day. This, in turn, paves the way for Lady Deathstrike to further complicate Logan's life. It's undeniable that Insomniac's take on Logan is firmly planted in familiar game design, but Wolverine is clearly doing more than just fitting a typical story of the character in it. From the little I played, its take on Logan, the way it continues to build out Earth-1048, and the authenticity of the character in how he plays are where the team is aiming to distinguish the game. Given that these are the same pillars that catapulted Insomniac's Spider-Man titles to success, Wolverine could shape up to be another excellent superhero game from the studio.
Title: Jurassic Park Meets Alien In This Childhood Dream Turned Horror Game Date: Thu, 13 Aug 2026 15:00:00 +0000 Link: https://www.gamespot.com/articles/jurassic-park-meets-alien-in-this-childhood-dream-turned-horror-game/ Revealed during PlayStation's State of Play earlier this year, The Lost Wild is a first-person horror game that combines the awe of walking amongst dinosaurs, such as in Jurassic Park, with the terror of being hunted by a creature you can't defeat, à la Alien: Isolation. For Great Ape Games CEO Nick Gregory, it's a lot more than that; it's the culmination of an idea he's had in his mind since childhood.  GameSpot recently caught up with Gregory via email to discuss the more than 20-year journey from boyhood dream to a Steam wishlist darling. He spoke to his team's growth as the project shifted to a full-time job, The Lost Wild's humble origins before he even knew how to really make games, and the subtleties of depicting dinosaurs as "animals, not monsters." GameSpot: As I understand it, this game began as a Crysis mod. Can you talk about the long journey from that to where it is today? Nick Gregory: Believe it or not, this actually goes back even further than the Crysis mod. I was a teenager living with my mum, over two decades ago now. I was lucky enough to get a PC at that age, and it opened the door for me not only to gaming, but to tinkering too. It was not quite the proverbial garden shed, but it changed the course of my life all the same.  I first started tinkering with a game called Operation Flashpoint, a military sandbox game that shipped with a mission editor and extensive modding tools. I began with simple things like placing units, creating waypoints and setting up event logic, then gradually moved into custom mission scripts and assets. That period exposed me to a whole lot, learning how to model, script, keyframe, and design. None of it was remotely close to shippable quality, but it was an honest, naive, and practical crash course, driven entirely by passion and curiosity.  A few years later, I went through the same process with Crysis and CryEngine. The technology felt like a huge leap forward. Crysis shipped with its editor, and being able to load the game, fly around the world, and change things in real time felt extraordinary. It's easy to take that kind of workflow for granted nowadays, but at the time it was transformative. I joined the Crymod forums and became fascinated by what people were making with the SDK: maps, models, skins, full conversions. I would come home and see what everyone had created, and eventually I stopped wanting simply to observe it. I wanted to be part of it.  So I decided to find out what a dinosaur might look like in CryEngine. I wanted to know what it might feel like to walk alongside one in a natural environment, where it behaved like an animal rather than a mindless monster. That was the original vision, and it grew from there. The first dinosaur looked surprisingly good, so I began posting work-in-progress images online. Those posts gradually attracted people who believed in the idea, and before long we'd assembled a volunteer team of around 15 developers: artists, level designers, programmers and sound designers. Several of them now hold senior positions across the games industry. One of those people was Tim, who joined us straight out of university, believed deeply in the project and is now a fellow co-founder and Creative Director.  I was never the strongest developer. I was very much a kitbasher and generalist, but I discovered that I had an ability to establish a vision and a clear “why,” find talented people, bring them together, and articulate why an idea was worth pursuing. That has stayed with me throughout my career and still shapes how I run the studio today. We improvised constantly. At one point, we retrofitted Crytek's chicken AI to make one of our dinosaurs semi-functional. We were a million miles from producing a complete game, but the journey mattered far more than the destination for me. We formed lifelong friendships, learned an enormous amount, and eventually had the mod featured in a full-page article in PC Gamer, which was an incredible moment for a group of people building something from their bedrooms. Looking back, I think of that work less as an early version of the game and more as a piece of interactive 3D concept art. It proved there was something compelling at the heart of the idea, and it established the relationships and conviction that would eventually make the game possible. The idea stayed with me for nearly two decades, until we finally had the experience, technology, and opportunity to return to it and execute on it with a lot more knowledge and know-how.  So the journey from that mod to The Lost Wild was anything but a straight line. Looking back, it is surreal that a simple idea I had as a teenager could stay with me for so long and directly or indirectly shape so many of the decisions that followed. We still talk about how wild it is to this day.  The Lost Wild has taken Nick Gregory 20+ years to bring to life, but it's now nearly here. When, if ever, did The Lost Wild become your main focus/full-time job?  For several years, The Lost Wild was something we built around full-time jobs and other responsibilities. We spent our evenings and weekends developing a vertical slice because we felt it was important to show the game itself, rather than rely on a polished presentation and promises about what it might eventually become if everything went to plan.It was not easy. There were a lot of late nights, missed weekends, and personal savings poured into something with no guarantee that it would ever become more than an idea. It required a real sacrifice that, in hindsight, was now absolutely worth it. The major turning point came when we signed with Annapurna. Since then, The Lost Wild has been the studio’s full-time focus. Their support allowed us to grow the team, move into full production, and take the project from that early vertical slice towards the game we are now preparing to release.  So it was a gradual journey rather than a single overnight moment, but signing with Annapurna absolutely made this dream possible.  What's the size of the team making the game today, and how has that differed from its earliest version? When we first began working on the game full time, the core team consisted of just four people: myself, my co-founders Tim and David, and Dennis, a very talented freelance programmer at the time, who eventually joined us full time and is still with the studio today.  Today, the team has grown considerably. We now have eighteen staff based in the UK and a further nine full-time, salaried team members working internationally. We also collaborate with a number of co-development partners and contractors whose contributions are equally important to the game. Including everyone actively involved in development, the entire effort currently sits at around 30 people. It is a significant change from those earliest days, but we have tried to grow carefully and build the team around the specific needs of both the game and the studio, while also thinking about what comes next. Why dinosaurs? What is it that made you want to make such a game? I grew up on films like Jurassic Park, Jaws, Alien, and E.T. are just a few of them. I loved movies, and still do, so I probably had no choice but to be shaped by them. But I was always a gamer at heart, and I think that naturally made me want to take those feelings and turn them into something you could inhabit rather than simply watch. For me, dinosaurs occupy a fascinating space between the familiar and the unknowable. Everyone recognizes them, but our understanding of how these extinct animals actually moved, behaved, and interacted can only ever be reconstructed from the evidence they left behind. Paleontology can tell us an enormous amount, yet there are still gaps in our understanding, and those gaps leave room for imagination and curiosity.  The appeal was never simply about wanting to see a dinosaur up close. I wanted to experience them as animals. I wanted to see them moving through a natural environment, hunting, reacting, and existing without behaving like monsters. At the same time, I wanted to capture the reverence and natural horror that might come from actually encountering one in the wild. There is something very primal about that idea. It is a mixture of fascination, awe, and fear. You are looking at something extraordinary and beautiful, but also something powerful, unpredictable, and completely indifferent to you. Of course, it is all hypothetical, but it became a scratch I needed to itch.  In many ways, the game is my attempt to try and recreate the feelings those films gave me as a kid, but in a form where you are no longer sitting safely on the other side of the screen, but interacting with something instead.  How scary do you want the game to be? My hope is for The Lost Wild to be genuinely frightening, but not relentlessly so. The horror comes through observation, instinct, and restraint. It comes from feeling vulnerable, sharing an environment with powerful animals and never being entirely certain how they will respond. If every dinosaur simply attacked on sight, it would stop feeling like an animal and become a conventional monster.  Just as importantly, the fear has to sit alongside awe, fascination and respect. We want anticipation and uncertainty to do as much work as the encounters themselves. Ideally, players never feel completely in control, but there is still space to appreciate the animals and the world they inhabit and genuinely be fascinated by them - even when one may be trying to eat you.  What was it like designing the main character and who she is? What did you find important about creating this character? Saskia was important to us from very early on, because the entire experience is filtered through her. She is not a soldier or a scientist or a hero; she is an ordinary person thrown into an extraordinary situation. She wakes up on the island after a car crash and gradually realizes that dinosaurs are real, that the island belongs to a mysterious company called Idehama, and that she has no idea how she got there or how she is going to get out. That ordinariness was the whole point. The question we kept coming back to was simply, “if I were there, what would I do?”, and Saskia is our way of putting the player inside that question. The challenge was finding the balance between giving her enough personality to what we hope feels like a real, defined person while still leaving enough space for the player to inhabit her decisions. She is capable and resourceful, but she is not combat-trained.  We also wanted her story to be something you uncover rather than something we force upon you. Saskia’s journey is shared with the player’s, and is the grounding rod in the game.  Today, publisher Annapurna is revealing a new poster for The Lost Wild. Do you find it odd how relatively few dinosaur games there are? We see other enemy themes like zombies, raiders, or aliens so often. Why do you think we have so few dino games? This is such a great question because it’s so close to home for me. On the face of it, I have always wished there were more dinosaur games in general, particularly when you consider how universally loved dinosaurs are. Almost everyone has a dinosaur phase at some point, so it seems like an obvious subject for games. But I think the scarcity tells you something about how genuinely difficult they are to get right.  There are, of course, dinosaur games, but they are also technically difficult and hard to make convincing in my opinion.  For us, that difficulty was part of the appeal. We wanted the freedom to build our own world and explore our own “what if,” rather than simply imitate what had come before.  Where other people might see challenges, we saw it as a chance to do something on our own terms. If I recall rightly, the folks at the Summer Game Fest demo said the dinosaurs in The Lost Wild are “animals, not monsters.” I found this to be a really interesting nuance. What do you feel is the important distinction, given the game does feature the dinos sniffing you out and hunting you down? The distinction is really about motivation rather than danger. A monster exists to menace the player. It notices you the instant you enter the room, it fixates on you, and everything it does is built around threatening the person holding the controller. An animal does not care that you are the protagonist. You are simply another thing moving through its world. The fact that it might hunt you does not make it a monster; it makes it a predator behaving as a predator might. We were very deliberate about not reducing those encounters to conventional combat puzzles with obvious weak points You watch where an animal is looking before you move. You learn how it responds to sound, how it occupies a space, and when its attention may have shifted elsewhere. You are not equipped to kill the dinosaurs, but you can find non-lethal tools that help you create distractions, deter an approach or buy enough time to escape. Survival comes from evading, hiding, and using the environment rather than overpowering them.  And crucially, that framing is what leaves room for awe. If every dinosaur charged you on sight, you would only ever feel hunted. Because they behave like animals, there are moments where you can watch one and feel genuine wonder before the fear sets back in. They are not villains; they are creatures behaving as they should, and that produces a more complicated emotional response, one that blends fear with fascination and respect, I think. The danger is a consequence of what they are, not the entire reason they exist. I've likened the game to Alien: Isolation. Do you feel that was an inspiration? Any other inspirations you'd call out, especially those that may not be so obvious? It is a very fair comparison, and in our case it runs deeper than a surface resemblance. Our game director, Gary Napper, worked on Alien: Isolation, so there is first-hand experience within the team of how powerful vulnerability, restraint and anticipation can be. Knowing when to show a creature, when to hold back and when to let the player’s imagination do the work are all things we think about very carefully. That said, we are not trying to replace the xenomorph with a dinosaur. Our animals have their own behaviors, and their presence has to leave room for exploration, fascination, and awe as well as fear.  Beyond games, a lot of our influence comes from the natural world. The original Jurassic Park is a clear example for reverence and scale, but Jaws matters to me just as much because so much of its terror lives in what you do not see, and in the anticipation of the threat rather than the threat itself. The less obvious inspiration is wildlife filmmaking and real predator behavior. The patience, observation, and respect for an animal as an animal are things we think about constantly, because grounded behavior is what makes the whole experience convincing. We’ve watched all the dinosaur documentaries and YouTube videos, and are deep down dinosaur nerds at heart.  Alien: Isolation is a useful reference for the feeling of being hunted. Nature is the reference for how we want the hunter to feel. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A-frigam660 The Lost Wild seemed to capture a lot of wishlists on Steam after its reveal. What effect does that have on the team this far out from launch? Is it purely an emotional boost or does it have other benefits, too? It is absolutely an emotional boost, and I do not want to downplay that because it matters enormously. For a project that began with a small group of us working during evenings and weekends, seeing that level of interest is deeply validating. It tells us that the thing we believed in for so long resonates with people we have never met, and that is a wonderful feeling to have. But it is far more than a morale lift. Wishlists are a real signal, both to us and to our publisher. They are one of the clearest indications we have that the premise and presentation are connecting with an audience. Every wishlist is effectively someone saying, “You have my attention.” Our job is to earn the rest. Does the team have any policy or opinions on generative AI? Our position is straightforward. No generative AI content has been used in The Lost Wild. The art, writing, performances, audio, and other creative work in the game are the work of our team and development partners. We want the game to reflect the craft and authorship of the people making it. The Lost Wild is due out in 2027 on PlayStation 5 and PC.

Title: Hands-on report: Marvel’s Wolverine Date: Thu, 13 Aug 2026 15:00:03 +0000 Link: https://blog.playstation.com/2026/08/13/hands-on-report-marvels-wolverine/ It’s been a big week for fans of Marvel’s Wolverine, starting with the announcement of sharp-looking PS5 hardware and accessories. Now, with just over a month away until its September 15 launch, Insomniac is sharing a deep dive on the game’s story, combat, and exploration thanks to an extensive hands-on session with the game.   Our two-hour session kicked off with the game’s opening mission in the wilds of Telambang, where Wolverine has reunited with Team X to carry out a critical mission infiltrating the facility of anti-mutant industrialist Bolivar Trask. After slicing our way to a daring rescue, we jumped ahead in the game to a bombastic boss fight and a taste of Madripoor’s Lowtown. Between brutal barrages, stealthy scouting, and a range of rage-filled takedowns, we got to cut to the bone of the game’s story, flesh out Wolverine’s allies and foes, and uncover a piece of his buried past.   Taking on Trask  From the game’s opening moments flashing back to a feral, mangy-haired, and memory-wiped Wolverine, every sequence tested the balance between his rage and humanity. The first mission reunites him with Team X, a mutant task force formed by Nathaniel Essex to help protect mutants. Wolverine had stepped away from the group, something that has rankled his teammates, a wry Mystique and ever-savage Sabretooth.   Their mission takes them from the hidden facility of billionaire Bolivar Trask to the seedy backstreets of Madripoor, presenting Wolverine with the grim reality of what mutants in this world are facing. With mutants largely unknown by society, Trask has been spending his billions abducting, studying, and cruelly disposing of mutants with little regard for his victims in a quest to maintain human superiority. As the nefarious reality of the facility’s purpose becomes clearer, the horror Wolverine feels quickly pools into an unbridled rage. That rage drives him forward through throngs of Reaver enemies and a run in with Omega Red to eventually free Essex, who has been held captive by Trask.   Essex is the one who found Wolverine years before in that feral state, and formed Team X to protect mutants and build a world where mutants can be open. Between Essex and Trask, Wolverine is faced with the lengths some will go to protect the future of their kind, and will challenge him to face what kind of person he wants to be in this future.   Sink your claws in  Between storylines and set pieces, my biggest takeaway from my time with Marvel’s Wolverine was that it feels dang good to sink those claws in. Wolverine doesn’t just attack enemies, he catapults himself at them, targeting and launching himself from across the room to stun or barrage. Every combat encounter becomes a furious flurry, where my adrenaline feels directly tied to Wolverine’s increasing rage.  While a simple parry and barrage can get the job done, Wolverine can unlock a number of Special Techniques, skills that can be upgraded and mapped to the directional buttons for an extra flair in a fight. In my playthrough, I could cleave through a group surrounding me with Tornado Spin, or interrupt enemy attacks with Knee Breaker. Players can also unlock Adaptations, which upgrade long-term effects and skills like Logan’s health and rage meter.  That rage will come in handy. Successful combos build up Wolverine’s rage meter, which rises through three Rage Tiers to dramatically alter his fighting style. As Wolverine enters Rage Tier 2, his combos become more powerful and he unlocks Last Stand, which allows him to use his rage to heal his body if fully downed. But things really go over the edge when Wolverine’s meter fills to Rage Tier 3. His attacks become significantly more powerful, while brutal critical strikes become available. His vision seems to close in, his breathing getting louder and more primal as he darts between enemies, slicing and dicing with ease. Those critical strikes can lead to some dangerously fun takedowns, like snatching a member of The Hand’s katana or bow to slam back into them.   Sometimes, Wolverine needs a more methodical approach. He can use his Enhanced Senses to track and takedown enemies more stealthily. Trask also has Ability Inhibitors at his disposal that block Wolverine and his teammates from using their abilities. In these moments, he must work past the pain and fight without healing, focusing on taking enemies down with classic combat moves and destroying the Inhibitors before it’s too late.  It took all the skills I had gathered so far to take on the looming Sentinel Prototype towards the end of my preview. Built by Trask to detect and destroy mutants, this fight took all of Wolverine’s patience and strategy, dodging or parrying the Sentinel’s powerful attacks, while waiting for the perfect moments to strike. This sequence was thrilling both to use Wolverine’s abilities to their fullest potential, and to watch as he worked in tandem with Mystique and Sabretooth. By the time I was busting through the Sentinel’s head victorious, I had a wild grin on my face and felt amped and ready to take on anyone.   More to explore  Luckily after that fight, there was still more to explore. In Madripoor, surrounded by allies new and old, we took a moment of respite in Princess Bar (run by Tyger). Here we got to interact with newly acquired ally Jean Grey, and the mutant teens she has been protecting. Though they are still a mystery to one another, Jean and Wolverine’s connection is immediate. It’s with her that he can admit that his anger sometimes scares him and that he wants to be better.  I enjoyed that Wolverine also makes time here for his teammates Mystique and Sabretooth. Mystique stays focused and on mission during combat, shifting through identities when needed. Here in Princess Bar, she can just be herself, and encourages Wolverine to do the same through a friendly but vulnerable game of Never Have I Ever. Sabretooth spends most of the game’s opening antagonizing Wolverine and calling him a runt, which is fair enough given he stands about as tall as Sabretooth’s navel. But it’s clear their relationship runs deeper, and Sabretooth feels spurned by Wolverine’s original exit from the group.   While exploring the streets of Lowtown, I could take the time to check out some of Wolverine’s other looks and claw types, which ranged from a classic undershirt and jeans outfit to a Weapon X helmeted style. While walking around the Princess Bar, Wolverine’s Enhanced Senses could pick up on conversation or music that could guide him to specific rooms, or trail a teammate’s scent to find where they’ve run off to. Exploring each room sometimes led to a conversation, or finding easter eggs, like Mystique’s wedding pictures, or an IOU written on an ace of spades card from one Remy LeBeau.   Take the time to explore each new location, as Wolverine can discover hidden crates with raw upgrade materials or collectable whisky bottles. Logan can also stumble across Nightmare Doors, which transport him to a dreamlike cabin to take part in a Nightmare Trial. These timed speed trials reimagine different locations from the game into a vertical fever dream, where he can race to the end to unlock a forgotten memory from his past.   Players can sink their claws into Wolverine’s story and tap into his rage when Marvel’s Wolverine launches September 15 on PS5 consoles.

Title: Kinetic Publishing Showcase recap: 5 new indie games coming to PS5 Date: Wed, 12 Aug 2026 19:30:04 +0000 Link: https://blog.playstation.com/2026/08/12/kinetic-publishing-showcase-recap-5-new-indie-games-coming-to-ps5/ You may have heard of Kinetic Games through our horror title, Phasmophobia. It’s sold over 27 million copies, and thanks to this success, in January of this year we established our very own publishing label, Kinetic Publishing. Our aim at Kinetic Publishing is to support and empower indie devs to create incredible games, giving them the level of support that our founder, Daniel Knight, would have benefitted from when he was first creating Phasmophobia. Today we debuted our Kinetic Publishing showcase, where we got to reveal the first five games we’ll be publishing throughout 2027 and 2028. These dev teams all have unique, inspiring stories and just as equally exciting games. From a true sci-fi horror to a witch-tech delivery adventure, and everything in between, we’ve curated a selection of games we hope players are going to love, and of course, they will all be available on PlayStation 5. Contact Protocol  Can you make the right decisions under pressure? That’s the question the team behind Contact Protocol wants the answer to. In this sci-fi starship job simulator, you are tasked with the scourge that is corporate admin as you assess the intentions of incoming ships on the Pale Horse’s voyage to Jupiter’s largest moon. Compare incoming information against company records and do your best to determine whether ships are friend or foe. But make the wrong decision and all it takes is one torpedo to guarantee your safety – while sending the other crew to their death in the vacuum of space. It’s high stakes, it’s intense, but it’ll leave you coming back for more, as players will soon find out when Contact Protocol launches on PlayStation 5 in Spring 2027. Crescent County  Crescent County is a game that sings with sunset-soaked, dreamy graphics from the mind of creative director and illustrator, Anna Hollinrake. Based on her own lived experience moving to the Isle of Wight, players will discover what it means to find home on this magical crescent isle. From crunchy, flow-state motorbroom driving, to messy, gossip-fuelled local drama and flirty relationships, Crescent County aims to offer the experience of Kiki’s Delivery Service meets the bikes of Akira set on a rural, witch-tech island. Celebrating queerness, found-family and community in a way we couldn’t ignore, get ready to lose yourself in the beauty of Crescent County when it comes to PlayStation 5 in Summer 2027. Shellbound  Shellbound has taken the best bits of a metroidvania and set them on a ‘big ass snail’. Giving real meaning to the phrase ‘living world’, players take on the role of a parasite exploring an environment where organs are labyrinths and the snail’s very biology can reshape the paths available to them. The combination of combat and platforming provides the much-loved metroidvania challenge, proving simple to learn but satisfyingly difficult to master. Harnessing these abilities is the key to reaching hidden areas, unlocking new routes, and defeating powerful bosses – which players will learn when Shellbound launches on PlayStation 5 in Summer 2028. Aether Wizard Life  The creativity and ambition of the team at Vonder Games is truly something to behold, as they combine town-building, platforming and exploration with action-RPG combat, farming, and dating in Aether Wizard Life. Players take on the role of an apprentice mage in the haunted town of Starfall, and must uncover the secrets of mysterious wizard kidnappings. Along the way, you are free to choose what tasks to take on each day, whether that’s growing magical crops, caring for exotic creatures, venturing into deep and twisting dungeons to fight monsters, or talking with the townsfolk to discover new side quests and problems to solve. Precognition  We are beyond excited to announce that we will be partnering with Half Mermaid Productions on their newest game, Precognition. Originally teased under the name ‘Project C’, Precognition is a sci-fi horror being created by Immortality and Her Story creator Sam Barlow in collaboration with acclaimed horror director Brandon Cronenberg. At Kinetic, we’ve played (and gotten hooked on) Sam’s previous FMV games like Immortality and Her Story, and jumped at the chance to work with such a talented team. Of course, Kinetic is best known for its own horror title, so we’re very happy to have an equally thrilling game in our publishing lineup. And Precognition aims to go one step further than Sam’s previous games, giving players a real sense of agency and freedom in choosing where the story goes. Be sure to interrogate the smallest of details, and get ready to face the consequences that await when you meddle with the flow of time, when Precognition launches on PlayStation 5 in Spring 2028.

Title: "Obvious tells and subtle hints" - Alien: Isolation's lead designer on the lethal variety of The Lost Wild's dinosaurs Date: Thu, 13 Aug 2026 16:00:00 +0000 Link: https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/obvious-tells-and-subtle-hints-alien-isolations-lead-designer-on-the-lethal-variety-of-the-lost-wilds-dinosaurs First-person sneakalot The Lost Wild is about surviving on an island overrun by dinosaurs, from the relatively affable diplodocus to the absolutely intolerable allosaurus. I'm not sure how you survive a brush with an allosaurus, because allosauruses appear to be provoked by any and all objects in their vicinity. "An area [of the project] I find particularly fascinating is the difference between dinosaur behaviour for each species, and what that could mean for gameplay and character," says game director Gary Napper, who joined developers Great Ape Games in 2025 following stints at Rare, Supermassive, and Creative Assembly. "Taking the team's expertise and current day understanding of dinosaur findings has allowed us to really lean into some of these theories," he continues. "One of my favourites is a fact that they know that the allosaurus was quite an erratic and aggressive creature, because they found its teeth embedded in things like rocks and logs as well as other creatures, implying that it would just attack or go for anything around it." OK, so - what's my exit strategy, when facing an allosaurus? Do I just try to look like the least pugnacious rock? Read more
Title: Troubled Witcher multiplayer spinoff Project Sirius struck with new round of layoffs Date: Thu, 13 Aug 2026 14:32:11 +0000 Link: https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/troubled-witcher-multiplayer-spinoff-project-sirius-struck-with-new-round-of-layoffs Project Sirius, CD Projekt Red’s unsettled attempt at a multiplayer Witcher spinoff, is facing further difficulties. Following a Kotaku report, the Polish dev-publishers confirmed to IGN that they were cutting 18 staff members from the project – believed to be around a quarter of the game’s overall team size, which was already dwarfed by the CDPR crew assigned to mainline singleplayer sequel The Witcher 4. Of the affected developers, half have been made redundant, while half "have been invited to internal recruitment processes for potential roles on other CD Projekt Red projects." This is also the second time the company have slashed Project Sirius staff, with layoffs following an effective reboot in 2023. Read more
Title: Necrons are "extremely arrogant aliens that feel like they cannot die," so their weakness in Dawn of War 4 is an obvious one: greed Date: Thu, 13 Aug 2026 13:02:02 +0000 Link: https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/necrons-are-extremely-arrogant-aliens-that-feel-like-they-cannot-die-so-their-weakness-in-dawn-of-war-4-is-an-obvious-one-greed Dawn of War 4's Necrons are the hard nuts of Warhammer 40,000. Each one of their soldiers is a >soul trapped in a living metal body, practically immortal thanks to the faction's reanimation technology. Like a clothes moth infestation, once they've made their home on a planet, they're virtually impossible to get rid of. They lend themselves to wars of attrition, constantly expanding their borders while absorbing enemy attacks. "Players love this type of playstyle," Dawn of War 4's senior game designer Elliott Verbiest tells me, "but it's something that isn't necessarily conducive to interesting multiplayer gameplay. It's kind of the same deal as rock, paper scissors where both players are just throwing rock over and over and over again." To counter this, developers King Art Games have introduced a chink in the Necron's armour, and it's a very human impulse: greed. Read more
Title: Do a literal monster mash in Dance of Theseus, a strangely undisgusting blend of plastic surgery and Balatro-style fashion battles Date: Thu, 13 Aug 2026 12:03:08 +0000 Link: https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/do-a-literal-monster-mash-in-dance-of-theseus-a-strangely-undisgusting-blend-of-plastic-surgery-and-balatro-style-fashion-battles It is time to confront the terrible truth that I once took part in a school fashion show. I ran in two categories, Ballroom and Street, a serious test of range for a kid who had only just mastered the daredevil technique of wearing a shirt without a tie. In the Ballroom bracket, I was asked to do a waltz in an Indian wedding gown provided by a local sponsor who, I can only assume, immediately went out of business. In Street, I had to wear a Gap hoodtop and shoot a fire-eater (one of the Cool Teachers) with a Super Soaker, while some other lost soul moonwalked down the runway in a golden suit. In retrospect, I am filing all this under the secret umbrella category of God's Greatest Mistake. There is exactly no photographic evidence, and I will thank you not to search for any on Facebook. It's so much less upsetting being a fashion model in Dance of Theseus, which might sound weird given that in Dance of Theseus, you don't just swap outfits – you graft on new heads, arms and legs, either bought from sniffy griffon dressmakers or moulded together out of seashells, horned skulls, and scraps of shimmering hide. Created by Shanghai-based Citreat Studio, it's a cheerful, colourful and somehow unrevolting life sim RPG with a kind of Balatro-esque Frankensteinmaxxing element. I've been playing the demo, and it's both entertaining and a source of endless inspiration. Argh, if only I'd had access to this, when I was 16!!! Read more
Title: "We're not really sure what Big Walk's future looks like," say the waddling co-op puzzler's devs, though it probably doesn’t involve DLC Date: Thu, 13 Aug 2026 11:31:00 +0000 Link: https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/were-not-really-sure-what-big-walks-future-looks-like-say-the-waddling-co-op-puzzlers-devs-though-it-probably-doesnt-involve-dlc I’ve spent something like seven hours in funny-thinky cooperative puzzler Big Walk, and the concept of more Big Walk is something that confounds and, just a little bit, frightens me. What, you spent an entire evening stubbing toes in the dark and overconfidently barking incorrect solutions at friends, only for the opening of the map room to reveal the humbling significance of your progress thus far, and you want more? Friend, if I play this until my forties, I might make it halfway through. Even so, questions on future content were repeatedly put to developers House House in a recent reddit AMA. The response: no plans at the moment, though there’s nothing stopping completionist players from making their own fun with its freeform systems. Read more
