Title: Nintendo Turns 137 Today, Making It Older (And Better) Than Sliced Bread Date: Wed, 23 Sep 2026 14:37:51 +0000 Link: https://www.gamespot.com/articles/nintendo-turns-137-today-making-it-older-and-better-than-sliced-bread/ Nintendo is officially 137 years old today, and while that's an odd number to celebrate, it's certainly an impressive one. While it's a leading producer of video games and gaming hardware, the company originally started life as a maker of hanafuda playing cards in 1889, evolving with the times to eventually become a gaming powerhouse. But to put its age into perspective, it's worth looking at things that Nintendo predates. That makes for a long list, but the biggest surprise, as pointed out online, is that Nintendo is literally older than sliced bread. Technically, this would make sliced bread the best thing since Nintendo, and for double-technicality points, we're referring to commercial pre-sliced bread. According to the history books, pre-sliced bread made its commercial debut 38 years later, on July 7, 1928, when the Missouri-based Chillicothe Baking Company began using Otto Frederick Rohwedder's bread-slicing machine to deliver tasty portions of the household staple to customers. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dhw8BfVO_EY Historically, Nintendo also beat the public opening of the Eiffel Tower (June 1893) and the Wright Brothers' first flight (1903), and it outlasted the Ottoman Empire. It also has a big lead on the invention of penicillin (1928), chocolate chip cookies (1938), bubble wrap (1957), and the greatest movie of all time, Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim (2013). If there's anything that equals the historical significance of Nintendo, that would be Vincent Van Gogh's iconic Starry Night painting, which was created the same year that Nintendo was formed. Today, Nintendo is worth many billions of dollars thanks to the release of several highly successful consoles, including the Wii and the Switch. In recent years, it has also intensified its efforts to be more than just a video game company, launching new theme parks and slowly releasing more feature film adaptations based on its original IP. The two Super Mario Bros. movies developed by Illumination have each grossed north of $1 billion at the box office, and the next project is a live-action Legend of Zelda movie.
Title: Best Red Dead Redemption 2 Mods To Improve The Game In 2026 Date: Tue, 09 Dec 2025 04:19:00 +0000 Link: https://www.gamespot.com/gallery/best-red-dead-redemption-2-mods/2900-6465/ Red Dead Redemption 2 mods have kept Rockstar's western game alive and changing long after Rockstar itself moved on. After one last holiday update in 2022, Rockstar left Red Dead Redemption 2 behind and, for the most part, left behind Red Dead Online as well, with most of the studio's resources going toward GTA 6. However, Red Dead Online did receive a new update in 2025 that brought new zombie and robot missions to the game. Rockstar might be mostly finished with Red Dead for now, but Red Dead fans certainly aren't. The mod community has dug into nearly every aspect of the game and found ways to make it better, harder, easier, less rigid, more inflexible--if there's something you've wanted to change about Red Dead Redemption 2, you can bet a modder has something out there for you. NexusMods hosts hundreds of Red Dead Redemption 2 mods, but we've gathered 24 of the best together, from new clothes for Arthur to part-time jobs, better bounties, and an expansive reimagining of the game's melee combat system. Bear in mind that, like with most mods, these only work for Red Dead Redemption 2's PC version. If you're after some console fun instead, check out our picks for the best PS5 gamesand best Xbox Series X|S games to play in 2026. Rampage Trainer Creator: RampageDev Download Link: NexusMods The Rampage Trainer mod for Red Dead Redemption 2 is one of the most popular on NexusMods, and it's not hard to see why. It essentially gives you access that's normally restricted to a debug menu. Rampage Trainer lets you alter character stats and attributes, switch Arthur's model for any other character, generate a companion, or revisit out-of-bounds areas--and that's just the start. However, it's probably not something you'd want to do for your first, or maybe even second, playthrough, since it lets you completely alter any part of the game and experience it in a way you're not really meant to. Advertisement WhyEm's DLC Creator: WhyEm Download link: NexusMods WhyEm's DLC has nothing to do with Red Dead Redemption 2's gameplay and everything to do with making Arthur look even more stylish. It adds more than 2,000 new cosmetics, including beard styles and hairdos for Arthur at the barber shop, new clothes from the trapper, more saddles, and even carvings and grips, the latter of which you can collect and customize at any gun store. WhyEm's DLC even lets you customize how clothing looks, with options to remove suspenders, belts, and holsters, and separate menus for customizing other accessories. It's massive, but also a little finicky at first. Among other requirements, you need to make sure Arthur has every main item equipped, including a satchel, when you install the mod, or it won't work. Advertisement Duels Creator: Shtivi Download link: NexusMods Rockstar went to impressive lengths to make Red Dead Redemption 2 historically accurate to the real Wild West, and that includes not having people whip out their revolvers anytime someome gives them a sideways glance. As chaotic as the Old West could be, shootouts weren't a daily occurrence in every frontier town, and they aren't in Red Dead Redemption 2, either. At least, until you install this mod. Duels lets you challenge any NPC to a gunfight--literally any NPC you come across--with unique animations, cinematics, conversations, and customizable settings. You have to instigate the duel yourself, too, so you won't just be getting ambushed by anyone who walks by. Advertisement Crime and Law Rebalance and Enhancement Creator: Blackjack Colver Voltaire - Natsu - SgtJoe - Modifiver - Gameroll Download link: NexusMods Crime and Law Rebalance is a sweeping overhaul of Red Dead Redemption 2's crime system, one that makes it simultaneously easier to get away with a crime and harder to survive once you're hunted. The mod disables minor crimes in all settlements, makes everything legal in the wilderness, and slows down how long it takes for you to earn a wanted status after robbing a train. Lawmen are also less likely to hunt you with dogs. On the other hand, Pinkertons and law enforcement are more cunning and dangerous thanks to improved behavior, and more competent agents are likely to join the hunt when your wanted level is higher. There's a lot more to it, even down to giving Pinkerton agents better horses, but one of the other standout features is that every gang has unique behavior. They'll all fight differently and pose specific challenges that force you to adapt your strategies when you take them on. Advertisement Bounty Hunting Expanded and Enhanced Creator: Shtivi Download link: NexusMods Bounty Hunting Expanded and Enhanced takes the base game's comparatively tame bounty hunting and turns it into something rather more exciting. For one thing, the mod gives Arthur some bounty hunter rivals who are just as capable as himself and liable to take the reward if you don't act fast enough. You can steal their bounties if you happen upon them in the wilderness and even order a custom bounty wagon for hauling and turning in several criminals at once. Enemy behavior is also smarter and more aggressive, so even regular bounties will pose more of a challenge, and the mod adds dozens of new mission locations, including Annesburg. Advertisement Enhanced Brawling Creator: 14N001st Download link: NexusMods Enhanced Brawling is a collection of several mods that improve fistfighting in an impressive variety of ways, to the point where Arthur is practically a character from a fighting game. The headline addition is a set of six brawling styles, each with unique grapple moves and animations, and new knife attacks and animations. Enhanced Brawling also adds light and heavy attacks, counter moves, grapple escapes, and the option to chuck your opponent over rails or a wall if such a construction happens to be near when you're grappling. It's a refreshing and deep overhaul of what often feels like Red Dead Redemption 2's weakest system, and having more ways to negotiate with your hands means you can save on ammo, too. Advertisement No Bounty When Masked Creator: Shtivi Download link: NexusMods Red Dead Redemption 2's No Bounties When Masked mod makes a small but important change to how the game's bounty system works. Normally, Arthur has a bounty placed on him when he commits a robbery or serious crime, even if no one can see his face--an impressive, nearly impossible feat of identification on the part of his witnesses. No Bounty When Masked lives up to its name and keeps Arthur from having a bounty placed on him if he commits a crime when masked, though he'll still be a wanted criminal. The mask has to be up before he does the deed, and if you take it off before his wanted level drops, then the bounty will appear as usual. Advertisement Basic Needs: Final Cut Creator: Bolmin Download link: NexusMods The Basic Needs mod for Red Dead Redemption 2 expands Rockstar's survival foundation with a selection of new cores to contend with. In addition to stamina and health, you also have to manage hunger, exhaustion, equipment weight, thirst, and, in a twist that makes it a bit like The Sims, urination. Thankfully, Arthur won't die from embarrassment if he has an accident, though. Exhaustion functions like an add-on to stamina and fluctuates depending on what you're doing at a given time of day. Thirst lets you drink from water sources, bathe, or refill your canteen, with a toggle that makes alcohol contribute to Arthur's dehydration, and urination is, well, urination. Hunger, as the mod maker says, is the least developed of the new cores. Failing to eat gives Arthur penalties, but that's about it. The mod lets you toggle any of these cores, so if you only want to impose an equipment weight limit on Arthur, you can ignore the rest. Advertisement Contracts Remastered Creator: Shtivi Download link: NexusMods Contracts Remastered adds a stealth game touch to the old west with a special type of bounty. Once you install this mod, Arthur can pick up unique bounties that act almost like puzzles. He gets a photograph of his target and a small amount of information about them--and that's it. Your job is remaining observant and picking out the target from the throng of normal NPCs, before deciding how to approach the hit. You can take them out quietly, make a scene by turning them into a hostage, or do whatever else you think might work. The mod even comes with an in-game tutorial to help get you started. Advertisement Immersive Scenarios Creator: MaybelleElizabethColter Download link: NexusMods Immersive Scenarios is one of the quieter Red Dead Redemption 2 gameplay mods--one that adds a little extra to Arthur's moment-to-moment actions. These are the little, normal, everyday things that other characters can do, such as playing an instrument or leaning against a wall, but that Arthur usually can't. It's perfect for photo mode--and Red Dead 2 has one of the best photo modes around–or if you just want it to seem more like Arthur belongs in the world, instead of him being a passive observer. Bear in mind that the Immersive Scenarios mod only works if an NPC isn't already performing that action. You can't shove someone off a piano bench and take up their song, for example. You'll have to wait until they finish. Advertisement Stash That Lantern Creator: Juliet G Download link: NexusMods Juliet G's Stash That Lantern mod seems like a simple thing on the surface, but it fixes one of Red Dead Redemption 2's most persistent minor annoyances. Normally, the game treats the lantern as a held object, which means Arthur can't hold anything else in the hand with the lantern. That'd make sense--if Arthur were actually holding the lantern. Red Dead Redemption 2 lets you clip the lantern to Arthur's satchel, but still acts like he's holding it, which leaves you with just one free hand and makes it impossible to use two-handed weapons, among other things. Stash That Lantern resolves the issue. When you clip the lantern to Arthur's satchel with this mod installed, he's free to use both hands. Advertisement Perfect Pelts Creator: IMaVeRicK Download link: NexusMods Perfect Pelts is another Red Dead Redemption 2 mod that makes a finicky, often-irritating system easier to deal with. Normally, Arthur has a chance of damaging pelts when he hunts an animal, which means you have to go back out into the wild, hunt another beast, and repeat the process again with the right weapon and method. It makes sense, as hunting a small animal with a large shotgun will, of course, damage their skin. Perfect Pelts gives you two new ways to deal with this situation and save time, though. The first makes it so every animal that spawns does so in perfect condition, which means you still have a chance to damage it if you hunt it in a careless manner. The second is completely accident-proof, which means you can use any weapon against any animal and still get a perfect pelt. Advertisement Stagecoach Robberies Creator: Shtivi Download link: NexusMods Stagecoach Robberies were rather more common in the 19th and early 20th centuries than Red Dead Redemption 2's scant few stagecoach missions would suggest, and this mod aims to fix that imbalance. It generates random stagecoach missions for Arthur to accept in any part of the map, including Tumbleweed, and there's no limit to how many you can tackle. The missions come in two varieties--merchandise that your client wants from the coach and lockboxes for you to empty. Post offices caught up in the robberies will be closed for a time after the mission ends, and like with the game's other robbery missions, if you don't reach the ambush point in time, you fail the mission. Advertisement Dynamic Seasons Creator: Bolmin Download link: NexusMods Dynamic Seasons is another Red Dead Redemption 2 mod that's perfect for photo mode or for those who just want Arthur's world to feel a little more alive. Normally, seasons don't progress in Red Dead 2. Once you finish the prologue, that's it for the snow for a long time unless you explore certain areas. Dynamic Seasons adds a rotation that sees the seasons cycle, with weather effects and color palettes for each. Autumn, for instance, has a higher chance of more-extreme weather, while winter forces you to manage Arthur's temperature more carefully. The mod's latest version adds a widget that shows the current season and how long it'll last, and you can edit the default season length in the mod's files, too. Advertisement Jobs Expanded and Enhanced Creator: Bolmin and Shtivi Download link: NexusMods Jobs Expanded and Enhanced is an excellent way to earn quite a lot of cash. The mod adds a job board in every major town with a selection of period-appropriate tasks for Arthur to take on. These range from being a carriage driver--Arthur magically gets his own carriage, so you don't have to buy one for the job--to helping out on a ranch and keeping watch over flocks by night. The pay is high, too. The dock hand job, for example, pays $26, so if you're not keen on treasure hunts or just want to stuff some extra money away, this is the mod for you. You'll need the mod tool Scripthook for Jobs Expanded and Enhanced to work, and Scripthook only functions in single-player mode. If you boot up Red Dead Online with Scripthook running, the program shuts Red Dead Redemption 2 down. Advertisement Buyable Properties Creator: Bolmin and Dick_Hertz Download link: NexusMods Buyable Properties lets you purchase a home, as the name suggests, though there are a few caveats. Mod creators Bolmin and Dick_Hertz made home buying and decorating an endgame activity, something to keep you busy after you reach the epilogue and (theoretically) have excess cash on hand. It's for John by default, but if you toggle a setting in the mod's files, you can play as Arthur instead. Whatever the case, once you reach the epilogue, you can shop for one of three homes outside of Red Dead Redemption 2's major settlements or even buy a hotel room in one of the three major hotels or the Rhodes Saloon. Red Dead Redemption 2's Buyable Properties mod lets you customize the interior and exterior as you see fit, and the most recent update adds a weapon locker to every property you own. Advertisement Bank Robberies Creator: Unlosing and Jedijosh920 Download Link: NexusMods Robberies play a huge role in Red Dead Redemption 2, but you can't just go into any location and rob it. This is especially frustrating when it comes to banks, as the bank robberies during the main story are some of the best pieces of content in the entire game. If you're yearning for more bank robbery action, you can download the Bank Robberies mod. This allows you to rob any of the supported banks on the map. All you have to do is point a weapon at the shopkeeper, steal the loot from inside the bank, and lose the authorities after you exit the bank. Advertisement Dog Companion Creator: Shtivi Download Link: NexusMods Your horse in Red Dead Redemption 2 becomes one of your most trusted companions, as you'll likely travel all over the map with the steed of your choice. However, if you want a change of pace, you can download the Dog Companion mod, which adds the ability to tame a dog and have it follow you around. You can simply find a stray dog on the map, pet it, and it will become your dog. The dog comes with all of the features you might expect; it can be called for, told to wait, attack enemies, and even help out with hunting. Your dog will truly become man's best friend out in the Old West. Advertisement All Weapons Unlocked Creator: Josefig Download Link: NexusMods If you've ever wanted to use a particular weapon in Red Dead Redemption 2 but you don't have it unlocked, then the All Weapons Unlocked mod is what you need. The mod immediately unlocks all weapons in the game at shops and fences, so you can always buy whatever you want, regardless of your progress in the story. Normally, certain guns don't become unlocked until after specific story intervals, but this mod gets rid of that restriction altogether. Advertisement Custom Gang Mod Creator: SergeantJoe Download Link: NexusMods Arthur Morgan's gang in Red Dead Redemption 2 is certainly memorable, but it's not exactly what you'd call a cohesive group. If you want to get out from under Dutch's thumb and avoid Micah at all costs, then you can download the Custom Gang Mod. This allows Arthur to establish his own gang, complete with recruited members, at a location of your choosing. You can control what your camp looks like and who's in it. If that wasn't enough, the mod also adds new custom heists into the game so your gang can score some easy cash to sustain itself. Advertisement Undead Nightmare II Creator: Dick Hertz and Eki Download Link: NexusMods One of the most memorable DLCs in video game history is the original Red Dead Redemption's "Undead Nightmare." This turned the Old West into a zombie-filled hellscape, where John Marston was able to take down hordes of zombies in a new, single-player campaign. Unfortunately, Rockstar Games didn't develop a sequel to this DLC for Red Dead 2, but luckily, you can download Undead Nightmare II to get the experience anyway. The mod features plenty of zombies at overrun settlements, new missions, and animations/textures from the original Red Dead Redemption. The mod allows you to play as John Marston as well, so it's a true sequel to the first DLC. Advertisement Open All Interiors Creator: konstantinos96b Download Link: NexusMods Have you ever wanted to go inside of a building or house in Red Dead 2, but the door is locked? This is the case for a majority of interiors across the various towns in the Western US, but not after you download the Open All Interiors mod. This mod opens every door across the map, giving you free access to explore all of the buildings and see what's inside. While most of the interiors might not be overly exciting to look at, just knowing you can go through the door is enough to make the game more immersive. Advertisement Companion System Creator: Bolmin Download Link: NexusMods Throughout the story of Red Dead 2, you'll come across numerous characters that Arthur and his gang interact with or even invite to join them. However, what if you could approach any character and ask them to be your personal companion? The Companion System mod adds this ability, allowing you to recruit over a dozen sidekicks from your gang. These companions come with unique dialogue and interactions, as well as the ability to aid you in combat and exploration. Advertisement Gun Tricks Creator: RampageDev Download Link: NexusMods If you're a fan of Red Dead Online, then you likely know the gun spinning tricks that are present in the mode. These tricks add a layer of customization to the game and simply look cool, especially in third-person view or right before engaging with an enemy. While these tricks aren't available in the story mode by default, the Gun Tricks mod adds them in for Arthur, and you have the entire repertoire of gun tricks at your disposal in the story mode. Advertisement RDR2 Care Overhaul - Player And Horse Care Creator: RcnYn Download Link: NexusMods RDR2 Care Overhaul is a comprehensive story mode mod that introduces thorough care systems for Arthur, John, and their horses. If Red Dead Redemption 2 wasn't enough of a challenge already, this mod lets you monitor things like Rest, Food, Drink, and Bladder on top of the game’s existing mechanics. The mod also significantly expands the horsey side of things, adding concerns like water quality and hoof-condition systems for both main and temporary horses. Horses can autonomously drink from nearby water sources and gain small benefits from natural behaviours such as grazing, resting and sleeping. Although it sounds like a lot to keep on top of, this mod isn't designed to turn the game into a brutal survival simulator, it just gives it that realistic edge. Water becomes a more central aspect of gameplay, too, which makes sense given the dusty setting. Players can collect water from natural sources, drink from or wash their canteens in rivers and lakes, and boil dirty water at campfires. The overhaul mod allows players to establish temporary camps while travelling, making this easier, alongside an adaptive HUD designed to match RDR2’s vanilla visual style. Advertisement Horse Variety Creator: sauvy11 Download Link: NexusMods The Horse Variety mod, much as the name implies, expands the horse population of the game, giving the world much greater breed and coat variety. Rather than replacing horses after they spawn or relying on a custom spawning script, the mod directly expands the population pools that determine which horses can naturally appear throughout the world. If that sounds too confusing, check out the mod page for a more detailed breakdown of horse breed spawn probability. The mod affects a wide range of horse populations, including mounted NPCs, town and road horses, hitched and corralled horses, wagons, coaches, and (optionally) wild horses. It also introduces Red Dead Online breeds and coats to Story Mode, including the Breton, Criollo, Gypsy Cob, Kladruber, and Norfolk Roadster. Special, rare, or expensive horses still play by the vanilla rules, though, spawning exclusively for the wealthier citizens of the world. It's a clever system that ensures Rockstar's distribution system doesn't go to waste. Advertisement True Frontier - Weather and Temperature Creator: SteamEngineAmur Download Link: NexusMods A big overhaul for immersion through the game's weather and temperature systems, this nifty mod creates longer-lasting, more gradual, and regionally varied weather patterns. Instead of the vanilla game’s relatively short (and abrupt) weather cycles, weather states can last between 1 and 10 in-game hours, with clouds, lighting, and fog transitioning smoothly over 60–90 seconds using a mathematical interpolation system. I don't know what that means, but you might.  The mod divides the world into six distinct climate zones, each with its own weather behaviour. The deserts (the New Austin area) receive clearer skies and dust storms, for example, while the swamps (Lemoyne, Bayou Nwa, and Bluewater Marsh) feature humidity, morning mist and nightly fog. Other regions receive their own combinations of rain, thunderstorms, cloud cover and clear skies. A detailed temperature and clothing system gives outfits practical environmental limits, too. Heavy winter clothing protects against extreme cold, moderate clothing covers milder conditions, and lightweight clothing is intended for hot weather. Arthur can suffer health or stamina penalties from prolonged freezing or overheating, while swimming in cold water can also affect his body temperature. Advertisement Play Dead Creator: HUUSTL3R Download Link: NexusMods This one's pretty simple: press F to play dead. When you're in a gunfight that outstrips your might, it's far easier to pretend you've been shot, wait for the enemy to leave, and then go about your day. Enemies will come over and check your condition, and as you lie there limply, they'll decide you're dead meat. You can use this to your advantage in battle by jumping up and surprising them, or just wait there until they give up on you entirely. It's cowardly, but savvy, and it might save you a few frustrations. Advertisement Batch Crafting Creator: cela901 Download Link: NexusMods Batch Crafting is a lightweight quality-of-life mod for Red Dead Redemption 2 and it's basically a lifesaver if you're pushed for time or have big plans. The mod hits that sweet spot of making the game's crafting system considerably faster without automating it. Instead of producing a single item with each crafting action, the mod allows players to configure how many items are created at once, from 1 to 99. That's it. That's the mod. But this one little tweak could save you hours. Advertisement
Title: Activision’s Halo Game: Everything We Know So Far Date: Wed, 23 Sep 2026 14:04:39 +0000 Link: https://www.gamespot.com/articles/activisions-halo-game-everything-we-know-so-far/ Microsoft is overhauling its Xbox business in a big--and painful--way. Part of the effort to "reset" Xbox involves enlisting Call of Duty publisher Activision to make the next Halo game. This isn't a spin-off or some kind of other extension of the iconic sci-fi series, but instead the next entry in the main series following 2021's disappointing Halo Infinite.  Here's what we know about Activision's Halo game, and what comes next for Halo Studios. What's the new game? The biggest question is what is the new Halo game from Activision? The announcement from Xbox chief content officer Matt Booty didn't reveal any specifics, but a story from The Hollywood Reporter said it is a "full-feature, mainline installment" in the long-running series. Activision boss Rob Kostich said in a statement to Game File that Activision is trying to make the "greatest Halo game ever." He said the ambition is to make a game that is "worthy of its universe and legacy, while staying true to what made players love it in the first place." "It is a bold ambition, one that this franchise deserves. We have already begun assembling a purpose-built team, unique in capability and talent, ready and excited to deliver this next chapter with the community," he added. Who is developing the new Halo game? Booty said Microsoft is putting together a "new, purpose-built team" to make the new Halo game at Activision. He also clarified that efforts to make the new Halo game at Activision are "separate from ongoing development and plans for Call of Duty."  Despite years of speculation that a Call of Duty studio could be assigned to Halo, a new team is being spun up. It remains to be seen if Activision's development of a new Halo game will have any impact on the Call of Duty franchise in terms of its established annual release schedule or if any key individuals will move from CoD development to Halo.  When can we expect the new Halo game from Activision? Given the comments from Kostich about assembling a team to make a new Halo game at Activision, it appears it's extremely early days for the game. As such, no one should expect to play it any time soon. Blizzard recently announced a new StarCraft shooter coming in 2030, while Bethesda revealed the unreleased Elder Scrolls 6 in 2018, showing that Xbox as a whole is not averse to confirming plans for games that could be a half decade or more away. What's happening to Halo Studios and its other games? According to Booty, a "small team" at Halo Studios will "continue supporting the Halo community and games in-market." Halo Studios is winding down significantly, with numerous staffers losing their jobs. This is a major shift. People may recall that in October 2024, Microsoft announced that Halo developer 343 changed its name to Halo Studios and outlined plans for multiple new games. Additionally, Halo Studios confirmed that it would develop new Halo games with the Unreal Engine going forward, as opposed to its own proprietary Slipspace game development engine.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FDgR1FRJnF8 At the time, many Halo fans saw this as an exciting opportunity for Microsoft to help Halo regain some of its former glory after Halo Infinite missed the mark for many. Microsoft also installed new leadership at Halo Studios, following reports of management issues internally.  Halo Studios released its first game under that name, Halo: Campaign Evolved, in July 2026, but it was reportedly a commercial disappointment. People were also bewildered by the fact that a remake of the iconic first game had no multiplayer support. To date, it's the one and only release from Halo Studios.  Given what Booty said about Halo Studios and its new charter, it seems likely that its in-development projects are dead. As for the shift to the Unreal Engine, Activision's Call of Duty games are made with proprietary engines, so those plans could be over as well.  Some of the games said to have been in the works at Halo Studios included a new live-service game described as being "like Fortnite" and remakes of Halo 2 and Halo 3. A Microsoft spokesperson declined to comment on the future of Halo Studios when approached by GameSpot.  Xbox CEO said making Halo popular again is a priority At Gamescom this year, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma said the Halo franchise remains "very key" to Xbox and that the company was taking a long-term view about reviving it. "It represents a very key memory structure and way that people want to play,” she told the BBC. “I am focused on that. We’ll have more news to share on Halo going forward.” Not everyone believes Microsoft can succeed at reviving Halo, including Halo's own co-creator and the designer of Master Chief. Marcus Lehto recently said--prior to the news that Activision is making the next Halo game--that a “big concern” he foresees about reviving Halo is how much it might cost. He said Microsoft making a “fully featured Halo” game would likely cost between $600 and $800 million, and take four or more years to make.  Halo Infinite. Lehto, who hasn’t worked on Halo in a long time, said he does not anticipate Microsoft spending that much or taking that much time. Lehto also said a large corporation like Microsoft is a “terribly inefficient machine.” He added that a “smaller indie team driven by seasoned devs, filled with a good mix of newer hungry talent as well, and minimal management layers is probably the only viable way to make a great Halo again.” Following the announcement that Halo is getting taken over by Activision, Lehto said he was "shocked but not entirely surprised." https://twitter.com/game_fabricator/status/2102659182944047297 The human impact Microsoft assigning Halo to Activision has led to pain for the people at Halo Studios. As mentioned, only a "small team" will remain at Halo Studios going forward to support Halo games already in the market. Other people are getting let go, including Halo's esports producer and cinematic director Josh Daniels (who had just been promoted in the past week). Beyond Halo Studios, the 268 layoffs at Xbox this week hit other teams, including Gears of War developer The Coalition, and other parts of the Xbox team. Looking ahead, more Xbox layoffs are coming, and it's prompted people to wonder: "What is Xbox Game Studios at this point?" Xbox is focusing on franchises Halo might not be as popular as it once was, but it carries brand recognition and is synonymous with Xbox. Microsoft was unlikely to abandon it completely, and in fact, the company reportedly already--some time ago--assigned Call of Duty developer Sledgehammer to conduct experiments with Halo. That effort has now graduated to Microsoft deciding to make a brand-new Halo game at Activision, so clearly the company sees potential.  Xbox CEO Asha Sharma. Earlier this year, Sharma said one of the big bets that Microsoft made to help grow Xbox was developing a "broader portfolio of content." That did not pay off in the way Microsoft expected, and Sharma made the decision to scale back significantly by laying people off, closing or divesting of studios, and cancelling a variety of games. This was all being done to "focus on higher-priority projects," Sharma said, and clearly Halo is one of those, alongside Fallout, The Elder Scrolls, Call of Duty, Minecraft, Fable, and Forza, to name a few.
Title: Diablo 5 Wants You To Feel Your Power, Not Just See A Bigger Number Date: Wed, 23 Sep 2026 13:50:45 +0000 Link: https://www.gamespot.com/articles/diablo-5-wants-you-to-feel-your-power-not-just-see-a-bigger-number/ Diablo 5 won't be out until 2029, but Blizzard is already sharing plenty of details on the game following its reveal at BlizzCon earlier this month. The power fantasy of being a demon-slaying warrior is one aspect of the Diablo experience that Blizzard wants to overhaul. Compared to Diablo 4, the developer wants you to feel the might of your newly earned power on the battlefield. Speaking to PC Gamer, game director Joe Shely explained how players should feel and look more powerful as they level up. "Diablo is a game that, in many ways, is about your character getting stronger and when the monsters get stronger at the same time, especially outside of your control," game director Joe Shely said. "You've filled the experience bar, you get stronger, you should feel awesome now, a wave of light pulses out from you, a bunch of monsters die." "That's wonderful, but then you're going to go hit some more monsters, and you should feel powerful. And sometimes automatic scaling can get in the way of that feeling, which is so core to it, and that's why this is a really important question. And so, we're going to take a somewhat different approach to that in Diablo 5." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=USLXXyEv5ag In Diablo 4, the game was criticized for having an aggressive layer of level-scaling for enemies. Even if you'd optimized your loadout and equipped optimal skills, there was always that friction between the player and the world, with players pointing out that the diminishing returns on Paragon points and fewer gear upgrades resulted in a frustrating bottleneck for them. Because of the open-world scaling at launch, there was effectively no area where you could safely farm better gear to help you survive in tougher zones. Blizzard would eventually adjust the system to make Diablo 4 feel less like an uphill treadmill. How Blizzard plans to properly implement these systems remains to be seen, but you can expect more updates about Diablo 5 to start rolling out next year. Combat is also under the Blizzard microscope as it aims to make it feel better than ever, and the return of set items should also help feed into the game's power fantasy.
Title: Gears of War: E-Day Story Director Laid Off Just Before Launch Date: Wed, 23 Sep 2026 13:29:36 +0000 Link: https://www.gamespot.com/articles/gears-of-war-e-day-story-director-laid-off-just-before-launch/ Gears of War: E-Day officially went gold several days ago--indicating that the game is ready to hit its October launch date--but sadly, story director Juan Vaca was caught up in the latest wave of Xbox "reset" layoffs. After posting about the game hittings its new milestone, Vaca revealed that he was one of over 260 people who was impacted by job cuts at Xbox. "I am part of this round of Microsoft Layoffs and am open to new opportunities in games/film/TV," Vaca wrote on LinkedIn. "If your team needs a director/storyteller please reach out." Vanca spent over four years at Gears of War: E-Day developer The Coalition, working as a story director. He'd previously interned at Marvel Studios, worked as a narrative designer at Telltale Games, and was employed at Netflix for three years, where he worked on several series. As mentioned above, he's one of hundreds of people affected by the continued reorganization of Xbox, as this week saw further consolidation of its various studios under Activision Blizzard, Bethesda, and King. The fresh round of layoffs has hit first-party developers, management, and central functions teams at Xbox Game Studios, and they come in the wake of 1,600 people being made redundant back in July. They also aren't over yet, as Xbox boss Matt Booty says that Microsoft is only three-quarters of the way done so far and Blizzard is expected to face cuts next. Another high-profile layoff was that of Halo Studios' cinematic director, Josh Daniels, just a day after he received a promotion. The studio has been heavily impacted by cuts, leaving a small team to focus on supporting current games in the series and the Halo community. As for the next Halo game, it'll be developed by a new team at Activision. Gears of War: E-Day launches on October 6.

Title: Leading Publishers Bring Blockbuster PC Games and Technology to NVIDIA RTX Spark Date: Tue, 25 Aug 2026 15:30:48 +0000 Link: https://blogs.nvidia.com/blog/gamescom-rtx-spark-pc-games-technology/ NVIDIA is bringing the next wave of RTX gaming to the Gamescom conference running this week in Cologne, Germany, with support for new games, anti-cheat technologies and increased visual quality.  Electronic Arts, Embark and Ubisoft are among the latest game publishers and developers bringing their blockbuster titles to NVIDIA RTX Spark ahead of its launch this fall. They join the publishers that announced RTX Spark support at COMPUTEX in May, including KRAFTON, NetEase, Riot Games and XBOX.  NVIDIA is working closely with game developers and ecosystem partners to ensure today’s top PC games — including EA’s EA SPORTS F1 25 and Apex Legends, Ubisoft’s Anno 117: Pax Romana and Embark Studios’ ARC Raiders and THE FINALS — run seamlessly on RTX Spark devices. “We’re excited to bring Anno 117: Pax Romana to a new generation of RTX-powered PCs,” said Stéphane Jankowski, Ubisoft executive producer of Anno 117 : Pax Romana. “Our teams build the game to be seen wide: full districts, long sightlines, thousands of details at once. Seeing RTX Spark hold that level of fidelity from a single chip is genuinely impressive.” RTX Spark reinvents personal computing, bringing personal AI agents, advanced content creation and high-performance gaming together in a platform engineered from the ground up for the next wave of Windows PCs. For gamers, RTX Spark combines Windows devices with NVIDIA RTX technologies, including DLSS and Reflex.  Bringing Anti-Cheat to RTX Spark Supporting modern PC gaming goes beyond running the game itself. Many of today’s biggest online games rely on sophisticated anti-cheat technologies, to enable fair play across the multiple platforms these games run on.   NVIDIA has been working with EA to bring native EA Javelin Anticheat support to RTX Spark, including for EA’s biggest multiplayer games, such as EA SPORTS F1 25. RTX Spark launches this fall.  RTX Delivers Next-Generation Gaming RTX Spark is just one part of NVIDIA’s lineup of gaming announcements at Gamescom, including: DLSS 4.5 Ray Reconstruction is available now, featuring NVIDIA’s latest second-generation transformer model to deliver even higher image quality in ray- and path-traced content. It replaces traditional denoisers with an NVIDIA supercomputer-trained AI network to reconstruct higher-quality pixels in the parts of a ray-traced frame where rays were not sampled. Path tracing comes to CONTROL Resonant and 007 First Light to deliver new levels of visual fidelity.  NVIDIA ACE technologies are coming to Aniimo in early 2027, letting players naturally interact with their creatures. Gears of War: E-Day includes RTX Mega Geometry integration, advancing image quality on GeForce RTX GPUs, alongside ray tracing and DLSS 4.5. RTX Remix keeps remastering PC classics, with a major Painkiller RTX mod update available now and The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind RTX coming soon. GeForce NOW gives members more ways to play with new DLSS 4.5 controls, expanded support for Steam Machine and other devices and platforms, plus blockbuster PC games including CONTROL Resonant, Gears of War: E-Day and more coming to the cloud at launch. Title: Fading Echo makes a splash on PlayStation 5 today Date: Tue, 22 Sep 2026 15:00:40 +0000 Link: https://blog.playstation.com/2026/09/22/fading-echo-makes-a-splash-on-playstation-5-today/ Hi PlayStation players! This is Sylvain from Emeteria, a New Tales studio, the team behind Fading Echo, and we’re excited to share that our fast-paced elemental action-adventure RPG is launching today on PlayStation 5. In Fading Echo, you play as One, a young Legend fighting to save Corel, a fractured world being consumed by a mysterious force known as the Paradox. To survive, you’ll experiment with One’s powers, manipulate the elements around you, and shift between realities to find new ways through combat, exploration, and puzzles. So, let’s dive in! Become water – then weaponize it Water – or Æther, as it’s known in the world of Fading Echo – is at the heart of One’s abilities. She can manipulate it, use it against enemies, and even transform herself into a living blob of it. One of our goals with Æther form was to make movement itself part of your toolbox. As a blob, you can build momentum, surf through pipes, squeeze through narrow cracks, and launch yourself across the environment. This can help you reach new areas and solve environmental puzzles, but it can be just as useful in combat. Get above an enemy, for example, and you can water-bomb them on the way down, making quite a splash. It’s as effective as it is fun. And movement is only the first ripple. One can also unleash waves of Æther and powerful charged blasts, drenching enemies and changing the state of the battlefield. But drenching an enemy is just the beginning: Æther reacts with elements such as lava, toxic waste, and even Paradox corruption, opening up all kinds of possibilities. Drench an enemy before conducting energy through them. Solidify elements to change the battlefield. Or look to your surroundings and set off a chain reaction that turns the situation in your favor. Play Video We designed these systems to reward experimentation rather than push you toward a single sequence of attacks. When you enter an encounter, we want you to look at the enemies, the environment, and the elements at your disposal and ask yourself: What happens if I try this? Sometimes everything will flow according to plan. Sometimes you’ll find a solution we didn’t see coming. There’s rarely just One answer. Bend reality to find another way Corel is no longer one stable world. The Paradox has fractured it into alternate realities, and One can shift between different versions of the same space – and even different versions of herself. Reality shifting is another system we wanted players to use across exploration, puzzles, and combat rather than for one specific purpose. A path blocked in one reality might be accessible in another. An element you need to solve a puzzle could exist on the other side of a shift. Sometimes, instead of looking for another route through the space in front of you, you’ll need to think about what that same space looks like in another reality. Combat follows the same principle. Shifting can change the resources, hazards, and elements available around you, so the same encounter can play out differently depending on where you choose to fight. For us, Æther, movement, elemental reactions, puzzles, and reality shifting are all parts of the same toolbox. We want you to learn how each system works, then start combining them and finding your own solutions. Explore a world consumed by the Paradox Of course, One has bigger problems than finding increasingly creative ways to deal with enemies. Paradox Corruption is spreading across Corel, twisting reality and consuming what remains of the world. At its center is Maddock, the ruthless leader of the Paradox on Corel, who stands in the way of One’s attempt to save it.Your journey will take you across floating islands and fractured realities as you search for a way to stop the corruption before there’s nothing left to save. And while Fading Echo is a single-player adventure, One won’t make that journey entirely alone. Across Corel, you’ll meet a small group of unlikely allies. Some stand beside One out of loyalty, others out of guilt, and some because they have nowhere else left to go. Each has their own relationship with this decaying world, and with One herself. But One’s journey isn’t only about saving Corel. It’s also about discovering who she is, uncovering the mysteries of her past, and finding the answers she’ll need to save her future. We’ve built Fading Echo around experimentation and giving you the freedom to find your own way through its world. If you’d like to get a first taste before jumping into the full adventure, a demo is also available today on PlayStation 5.  Now it’s time to dive in, PlayStation 5 players! Fading Echo is yours, and we can’t wait to see how you make your way through Corel.

Title: Silent Hill: Townfall — 9 ways first-person changes the iconic horror formula Date: Mon, 21 Sep 2026 07:00:18 +0000 Link: https://blog.playstation.com/2026/09/21/silent-hill-townfall-9-ways-first-person-changes-the-iconic-horror-formula/ The Silent Hill franchise has evolved with its most recent entries, expanding into settings that go beyond the eponymous foggy American town. In Silent Hill: Townfall, it also taps into a new way to terrify players, shifting from a traditionally third-person perspective to first-person. The series has previously offered glimpses of first-person gameplay, including Silent Hill 4: The Room (PS2, 2004) and Silent Hill: The Short Message (PS5, 2024). However, Silent Hill: Townfall is the first time you’ll face all the horrors of a full Silent Hill experience through the eyes of its protagonist. Play Video Here are nine ways Silent Hill: Downfall uses its first-person perspective to create a more intimate horror experience and amp up its scares. A claustrophobic perspective Silent Hill: Townfall puts you in the shoes, and viewpoint, of its protagonist character, Simon Ordell, which means you can’t see as much of the world around you as you might in a third-person Silent Hill game. You must be on your guard for threats coming from the side or behind you. The game also uses a 2.35:1 aspect ratio, making the screen wider at the sides but shorter vertically, creating a cinematic presentation — but one that also makes your vision feel realistically restricted. That change in presentation forces you to pay close attention to your surroundings and to listen for enemies you might not be able to see right away. A CRTV to see through the fog Characters in Silent Hill games often carry radios that can give them hints about when enemies are nearing them in the fog — when the radio emits static, danger is close. Townfall takes a more visual approach to this idea with its CRTV, a handheld device you can tune to different frequencies to see the positions of nearby enemies. L1 lets you hold the CRTV up in front of you as you move around, so you can see both what it displays and the world around you. The device also gives a helpful haptic pulse in your DualSense controller to let you know when a new enemy is near. Melee combat It’s a staple of Silent Hill games to battle twisted horrors using everyday objects like pieces of wood. But in Townfall, combat gets harrowing, as monsters throw themselves at your face and your only defense is to hold up a flimsy object to block them. You’ll need to react quickly to stop counterattacks and get some blows in if you want to stay alive. Stealth for survival Combat isn’t always an option in Townfall, and often you’ll have to sneak past enemies to survive. Ducking behind objects like fences, signs, and parked cars with Circle allows you to slip by many enemies unnoticed. You can also hold R1 and use the right analog stick to lean around corners or peek over the top of cover to see where enemies are so you can better avoid them — or scare yourself when you realize just how close they are. Running and hiding No matter how sneaky you are, sometimes, you just have to run for it. You can sometimes lose an enemy just by rounding a corner or ducking behind something, breaking their line of sight. You can also slip inside cabinets, closets, and lockers to hide, where you can watch them through a crack in the door or on the CRTV. But be careful: If an enemy sees you slip into a hiding place, they’ll chase you down and pull you out. Aiming weapons with motion control Motion control is one of Townfall’s useful features, which you can enable in its settings menu. This lets you tilt the DualSense controller to aim when using a firearm or throwing an object. Motion control makes it easier to dial in attacks on enemies with extra precision. But it also makes combat more frightening, since it’s tough to hold your controller perfectly still when your hands are shaking in fear. Dividing your attention The new first-person gameplay means you’re always worrying about what could be just out of view. When you open a door, you’ll need to quickly check what’s on the other side or risk stumbling into an enemy. Actions as innocuous as rifling through drawers or reading emails on a computer become eerie, since you’re vulnerable to monsters that may be shuffling around you. Even using your map (by hitting Triangle) causes you to hold it up in front of your face, robbing you of the ability to see what’s sneaking up on you. Searching your environment for clues Townfall’s first-person view makes puzzles more engaging but also more dangerous. With a more intimate perspective, you can search the environments around you for clues like notes left on desks or diagrams hidden in drawers. But that also means you often need to scour rooms and buildings for the information, and with creatures often stalking around in search of Simon, you’ll have to watch your back. Getting a glimpse of Simon’s inner life The first-person perspective isn’t all about scares. It also gives you a deeper look into Simon’s psyche at certain points. Rather than Simon speaking his thoughts aloud, you’ll sometimes see text appear over the screen to give you a sense of his inner monologue, bringing you a little closer to the character and giving you a sense of how he’s affected by what he’s seeing. For example, he might think “I feel sick…” when seeing something unsettling. With Silent Hill’s first big foray into first-person, Townfall provides plenty of scares as you make your way through the frightening fog of St. Amelia. You can feel the fear for yourself when Silent Hill: Townfall launches on September 24 on PlayStation 5.

Title: Microsoft want to record your face and feed it to a generative AI, telling it to go off and design a game from your frown Date: Wed, 23 Sep 2026 12:17:21 +0000 Link: https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/microsoft-want-to-record-your-face-and-feed-it-to-a-generative-ai-telling-it-to-go-off-and-design-a-game-from-your-frown A new patent from Microsoft shows how they want to record your facial expressions, show them to an AI, and have it redesign the game you're playing. It's not only your face they want, but also any words you might be muttering, growls you might be making, or, dare I say, even purrs. The broader technology described in the patent is a process for game designers to prompt an AI to build out the narrative elements of a game, including objectives, sidequests, NPCs, dialogue, and items. Rather than stop at that first pass, the process would continue when players are in the game, analysing how they're playing to then generate new content based on their actions and reactions. A quick peek behind the curtain: I, too, am using this technology and the rest of this article has been rewritten to match exactly the facial expression you are making right… now. Read more

The news follows a second round of mass layoffs this year at the studios still under Microsoft's thumb.
