Title: Battlefield 6 Removed A Fan-Favorite Mode, As Devs Look For “Best” Way To Bring It Back
Date: Mon, 10 Aug 2026 19:01:13 +0000
Link: https://www.gamespot.com/articles/battlefield-6-removed-a-fan-favorite-mode-as-devs-look-for-best-way-to-bring-it-back/
The removal of Rush from Battlefield 6 isn't going over well within the game's community, as developer Battlefield Studios confirms it's exploring ways to bring it back.
Playlists for the mode, along with several others like King of the Hill and Team Deathmatch, were removed with no real warning or fanfare from Battlefield 6 following its minor patch 1.4.1.5 update on August 4. The modes were also removed from custom searches, relegating the modes to Battlefield 6's Portal custom games.
According to the official Battlefield Comms social media account several days after the fact, developer Battlefield Studios said this was to "improve matchmaking quality by focusing players into the playlists seeing the most activity, creating more consistent matches that fill, and getting our players into the action faster."
https://x.com/BattlefieldComm/status/2085773140324761604?s=20
Rush has been a Battlefield staple for years, even if its implementation and smaller player-count matches in Battlefield 6 left something to be desired. But its removal entirely from official playlists has not been a popular decision, with players on the game's forums and Reddit reacting to the mode's removal with disbelief. One Steam player with close to 500 hours even allegedly went as far to request (and receive) a Battlefield 6 refund on Steam.
"Battlefield Studios, you don't get to remove the game modes I play and still keep my money," ExplorEverythingOnce said.
https://www.reddit.com/r/Battlefield/comments/1vi90wa/steam_just_fully_rfunded_me_for_battlefield_6/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=mweb3x&utm_name=post_embed&utm_term=1&utm_content=1
Battlefield Studios, for its part, stated it recognizes that some of the removed modes are "community favorites, regardless of how often they're played," and is looking at ways to bring them back into matchmaking.
"We're closely monitoring the impact of these playlist changes and will continue making adjustments where they're needed," Battlefield Studios said.
Battlefield 6's naval-combat themed Season 4 is currently in full swing, with the return of Wake Island and a Top Gun crossover scheduled to arrive August 18.
Title: Blizzard Is Reportedly Xbox’s New Top Studio
Date: Mon, 10 Aug 2026 17:59:30 +0000
Link: https://www.gamespot.com/articles/blizzard-is-reportedly-xboxs-new-top-studio/
Out of all of Xbox's studios (of which there are admittedly fewer now following mass layoffs and studio divestitures), Blizzard is reportedly the "top performing."
That's according to a new report from Windows Central based on emails sent by Blizzard president Johanna Faries to staff last week. In the emails, Faries celebrated the studio's performance ahead of BlizzCon in September, an event she hopes will "serve as a powerful springboard into a new era of momentum and excitement."
Faries went on to state Blizzard ended the 2026 fiscal year as the "top-performing studio in Xbox's studios division, and this past year has marked our third highest fiscal for top line revenue in Blizzard's history." Faries doesn't elaborate on what exactly "top performing" means, but Blizzard saw its first consecutive years of growth since fiscal year 2017. Faries attributed the growth to two games specifically.
"Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred and Overwatch drove exceptional performance in particular, with Overwatch delivering its strongest quarter since 2022," Faries said.
Both Diablo 4 and Overwatch have certainly had big years, as did World of Warcraft, which also released a new expansion earlier this year. Diablo 4's latest expansion was well-received, even if its latest season seemed to take two steps back. Even Diablo 2: Resurrected, a remaster of a 26-year-old game, received new content in the form of the Reign of the Warlock DLC. Overwatch, meanwhile, underwent a transformation of its own earlier this year, when it dropped the "2" from its name and introduced five new heroes at once.
News that Blizzard is Xbox's top-performing studio of the last year isn't exactly a shock, especially considering the poor performance of last year's Call of Duty: Black Ops 7. But it's a little surprising Blizzard hasn't been Xbox's top performer ever since Microsoft's acquisition of the studio back in 2023.
Not many studios are capable of operating multiple popular live-service games at once, and Blizzard has three big ones. Though WoW wasn't cited as a reason for growth, it alone has millions of players paying a monthly subscription fee, and both Overwatch and Diablo seem more popular (and more monetized) than ever. While one of Blizzard's games individually might not be able to compete toe-to-toe with juggernauts like Call of Duty or Minecraft, it's clear Blizzard's entire output combined is a powerful source of engagement and revenue for Microsoft.
As for what's next for Blizzard, BlizzCon is right around the corner on September 12-13, where there will no doubt be plenty of reveals about the future of Warcraft, Overwatch, and Diablo. Persistent rumors also point towards a new StarCraft game being revealed. Faries said last year 2026 will be Blizzard's "biggest year yet" and that she wants Blizzard to be the "best gaming and entertainment company in the world." This year's BlizzCon will "reflect that ambition in a bigger way," she said.
Title: Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls’ First PC Patch Targets Its Biggest Problems
Date: Mon, 10 Aug 2026 17:51:23 +0000
Link: https://www.gamespot.com/articles/marvel-tokon-fighting-souls-first-pc-patch-targets-its-biggest-problems/
Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls launched last week, and its first patch is taking aim at the many technical teething issues on PC. Poor optimization appears to be one of the major issues, as many users online have reported it being demanding on their systems despite having moderate PC requirements.
"We've been working on a number of fixes and improvements aimed at reducing performance issues, improving stability, and addressing some specific problems," Arc System Works wrote in an update. According to the patch notes, Arc has several fixes to help reduce overall CPU usage, improve frame rates, and address several bugs in the fighting game. Addressing the performance drops specifically, Arc noted that unnecessary checks could be the culprit, and one of the issues it identified was one where the game would unnecessarily check for available audio inputs.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vBw6b8VGPxk&pp=0gcJCckLAYcqIYzv
Once the new patch has been installed, make yourself a fresh cup of your beverage of choice, as it'll be recommended for you to go through the lengthy shader compilation process. Here's the full list of patch notes:
PC Fixes
Reduced CPU Usage
Multiple fixes have been implemented to reduce overall CPU usage, including:
An issue where the CPU ran high throughout the start-up process.
An issue where additional load on the system was being created due to periodic audio processing during matches.
Sudden Performance Drops
We identified an issue where the game was regularly checking for available audio inputs.
These unnecessary checks could cause sudden frame drops and performance drops. This has now been addressed.
Frame Rate Drops
Fixed an issue where the frame rate would drop when certain resolutions were selected.
Bug Fixes
Battle Settings
Fixed an issue where restarting the game with certain customization items or colors enabled would cause the settings to revert to default.
Online Lobby
Fixed an issue where changing how attack buttons were displayed to action icons resulted in some buttons becoming unresponsive during the open lobby mini games.
PC
Warm Up Those Shaders
With the game being updated to the latest version, the PC version will prompt you to warm up the shaders. Do so now for a smoother experience.
Auto Graphics Quality Setting
Improved auto spec detection to select a graphics profile that better fits your system.
While Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls has a high review aggregate of 88 on GameSpot's sister site Metacritic, user scores on Steam have been much lower. Many people have complained about the launch weekend issues hampering play, ranging from temperamental online lobbies to the mandatory PlayStation Network profile required for the PlayStation-published game.
If you're still planning to jump into the Marvel brawler--where performance on PS5 appears to be much smoother--you can check out GameSpot's guides, like our Marvel Tokon character tier list and how long it takes to beat the single-player campaign,

Title: After eBay’s Resounding Rejection, GameStop Reconsiders Its $56 Billion Acquisition Bid
Date: Mon, 10 Aug 2026 16:24:41 +0000
Link: https://www.gamespot.com/articles/after-ebay-resounding-rejection-gamestop-reconsiders-its-56-billion-acquisition-bid/
GameStop CEO Ryan Cohen might be ready to pull the plug on his ambitious plan to purchase eBay for $56 billion, a new report claims. Cohen--who came up with the plan while seated on his porcelain throne--had been pursuing the deal ever since it was announced, but eBay rejected the offer, saying it was “neither credible nor attractive.”
According to Bloomberg, Cohen is now considering a different strategy that would revolve around a partnership between eBay and GameStop to sell more collectible items like trading cards. GameStop has roughly 1,600 physical stores across the US, and Cohen has also spoken about creating a marketplace for digital gaming items through eBay. While eBay specializes in selling physical items like art and trading cards, Cohen added that video game in-game items were "massive," and eBay would be the perfect platform to sell them.
This is just one of several options available to GameStop, according to people familiar with the matter, but it has declined to comment about its future plans. While GameStop hasn't succeeded yet in acquiring eBay, it does have a 9.8% stake in the ecommerce platform. The original offer made to eBay's shareholders was to purchase each share for $125--50% in cash and 50% in GameStop stock--but where GameStop would get the money to finance this remains a mystery.
https://youtu.be/PeNclyAl9N4?si=cKAyYAHy66y1fOKw
GameStop has a market cap of around $12 billion, while eBay is currently valued at almost $54 billion. Cohen said that he could secure $20 billion in debt financing from TD Bank, while GameStop had $9 billion in cash that could be used toward the acquisition. The rest of the cash would come from outside sources, with Middle East sovereign wealth funds reportedly being one of the sources. Cohen originally stood to receive a pay package worth approximately $35 billion if the deal went through, but he canceled this plan.
"It's ultimately either going to be genius or totally, totally foolish," Cohen said earlier this year. “There are a lot of diamonds in the rough … that have sleepy management teams. I didn’t fix GameStop to stop there.”
If he succeeded in purchasing eBay, Cohen said in previous comments that he'd follow his GameStop business playbook by cutting costs and expanding into live commerce further. This is something that eBay does offer through eBay Live, livestreams hosted on the site where sellers promote their products to potential consumers--similar to an old-school after-hours live infomercial.
Title: This Switch Game You Might Have Bought Is Now Totally Unplayable
Date: Mon, 10 Aug 2026 16:03:44 +0000
Link: https://www.gamespot.com/articles/this-switch-game-you-might-have-bought-is-now-totally-unplayable/
The Nintendo Switch version of Aliens: Fireteam Elite is now completely removed from sale and impossible to play for people who bought it.
Developer Cold Iron Studios announced earlier this year that Fireteam Elite, a game that runs in the cloud and not locally, would be shut down on August 5, and now that day has come. The game was delisted on the Switch's eShop earlier this year, along with other digital platforms.
However, the game remains playable on other platforms in an offline state. Because the Switch version is streamed over the cloud, it's now totally unplayable.
Fireteam Elite originally launched in August 2021 on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC, before coming to Switch in April 2013 via the cloud. A sequel, Fireteam Elite 2, is coming this August on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC, with the Switch 2 edition arriving later in the year.
These kinds of issues, along with physical media going away, has prompted anger and frustration from fans, along with concerns about game preservation.
Cloud gaming has been around for years, in various stages, and Take-Two boss Strauss Zelnick recently said he expects adoption to continue to grow. During an earnings call recently, Zelnick said he believes the industry will be in "commercial streaming mode" within three years. He and others have theorized that expanded access to cloud gaming could help bring in more revenue by way of reaching more people.
With console prices continuing to go up, people might see cloud gaming as an increasingly attractive opportunity to play the latest games without needing to own expensive hardware. For this to work, though, there needs to be low latency, Zelnick said. People would also need steady and reliable connections, along with internet plans with generous data caps, or no caps at all.
The road to cloud gaming has been paved with plenty of issues. Google's Stadia service previously shut down and the cloud versions of Kingdom Hearts games, like Fireteam Elite for Switch, will be shut down in the future. These are issues that could engender mistrust with the entire concept of cloud gaming.
In 2019, Zelnick said clouding gaming was not going to revolutionize the gaming industry, nor did he buy into the theory that cloud streaming would open up a whole new market of people who previously didn't play games.

The Nintendo Switch 2 is just over a year old, and it already has an impressive lineup of third-party, non-Nintendo games. From Cyberpunk 2077 being a surprisingly great launch title to Capcom's continued support of the platform with recent hits like Resident Evil Requiem and Pragmata, Switch 2 owners have no shortage of games to play.
Title: Batman's new Joker actor officially confirms a shocking change to the iconic villains backstory
Date: Mon, 10 Aug 2026 19:00:12 GMT
Link: https://www.polygon.com/batman-caped-crusader-joker-matthew-needham-interview/
The Joker is Batman’s most iconic villain, and any actor stepping into the role faces the weight of decades of comics history and incredible performances from their predecessors. Cesar Romero’s cackling clown was perfect for the silly 1966 Batman show, but Jack Nicholson made Joker a terrifying gangster in Tim Burton’s 1989 Batman film. Mark Hamill’s maniacal laughter and sinister charm became the defining version of Joker for the generation who grew up on Batman: The Animated Series, while Heath Ledger disappeared into the role as portrayed the villain as a twisted avatar of chaos. Now, we have a new interpretation of the Clown Prince of Crime, and it's one of the most haunting yet.

We don’t always think too deeply about the things characters say in video games, but someone has to. A developer wrote the lines that cheerful or despondent NPC fed your character at the edge of the wasteland, or in a quiet room overlooking a gambling den. And the spectral form who visited your hero in their dreams could have just wailed. Instead, she questioned the nature of humanity, like a proper person.

Title: Best in Class: Stream PC Games and Study on the Same Laptop With GeForce NOW
Date: Thu, 30 Jul 2026 13:00:20 +0000
Link: https://blogs.nvidia.com/blog/geforce-now-thursday-back-to-school-2026/
Back to school means balancing assignments, deadlines and downtime. GeForce NOW makes it easy to have it all.
With cloud gaming, everyday laptops used for class can also become GeForce RTX-powered gaming setups.
When it’s time to switch from studying to gaming, members can jump into Halo: Campaign Evolved, as GeForce NOW is bringing one of the gaming world’s most celebrated titles to nearly any device through the cloud, alongside eight total games joining the GeForce NOW library this week.
From A+ to AAA Gaming
This back-to-school season, the easiest upgrade isn’t replacing laptops in backpacks. It’s unlocking even more from these same laptops, from creating to gaming.
With a GeForce NOW membership, Chromebooks, Macs and Surface devices can become GeForce RTX-powered gaming PCs in the cloud. The GeForce NOW library features thousands of supported PC games, letting members stream titles they already own from digital stores like Steam, Xbox PC Game Pass and Epic Games Store in just a few clicks.
The cloud keeps games up to date and ready to play, making it easy to jump into a match between classes, after homework or whenever there’s free time. Time spent waiting on downloads, patches and installs becomes time spent in game instead.
The Ultimate membership enables best-in-class experiences by delivering 5080-class performance in the cloud with NVIDIA DLSS, ray tracing and NVIDIA Reflex technologies for responsive, visually rich gameplay — all on the hardware gamers already own.
A creator known as “Menguiny” recently put this to the test after picking up a MacBook Neo. GeForce NOW turned the laptop — usually the creator’s go-to for editing videos and everyday work — into a top-notch gaming machine, too.
Another creator, “TechWithSeong” highlighted that same versatility GeForce NOW offers. Rather than juggling separate devices for work and gaming, he used GeForce NOW Ultimate to stream supported PC games across the devices he already owns — from a MacBook used for editing to gaming on the go with handheld devices.
Gamers can start with a day pass and experience all the premium benefits without a monthly commitment. Plus, the cost of a day pass can be applied toward a first membership purchase — it’s like earning a little extra credit along the way.
Everyone, at Their Stations
Needlers never looked so sharp.
Experience the Master Chief’s iconic journey on GeForce NOW in Halo: Campaign Evolved — a modernized remake of Halo: Combat Evolved’s campaign — rebuilt with high-definition visuals, updated cinematics and refined gameplay. Whether discovering Halo for the first time or returning after 25 years to finish the fight, it’s as the Master Chief says: “We’re just getting started.”
Crash-land on the mysterious ringworld alongside Cortana and uncover great secrets while battling overwhelming Covenant forces. Fight through the rebuilt campaign, then continue the adventure with three brand-new missions featuring the Master Chief and Sergeant Johnson. Expanded weapons, iconic vehicles, hijackable Wraith tanks and optional Skull modifiers offer even more ways to play.
Suit up across PCs, Macs, Chromebooks, handhelds, mobile devices, TVs and more with GeForce NOW Ultimate, powered by GeForce RTX 5080-class performance in the cloud. Experience Halo with NVIDIA DLSS, ray tracing and NVIDIA Reflex technologies delivering higher frame rates and ultralow latency that keep every firefight feeling responsive and worthy of a Spartan.
From solo gaming to online co-op modes, GeForce NOW cloud saves let members log in and pick up exactly where they left off across supported devices — no lengthy downloads, extra storage space or expensive hardware upgrades required. The only thing left to carry is the mission.
Let’s Play Today
In addition, members can stream the following games this week:
Halo: Campaign Evolved (New release on Steam and Xbox, available on Game Pass July 28)
Mistfall Hunter (New release on Steam July 29)
Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 (New release on Ubisoft Connect July 30)
Sudden Attack Zero Point (New release on Steam, July 30)
The Ranchers (New release on Steam, available July 30)
Corsair Cove (New release on Steam and Xbox, available on Game Pass July 31)
Funnel Runners (Steam)
Pathogenic (Steam)

This GFN Thursday brings more games, more power and more ways to play on GeForce NOW.
The cloud gaming service is expanding with a new GeForce RTX 5080-powered server in Toronto, bringing dedicated high performance in the cloud closer to members across the region.
NTE: Neverness to Everness also gets an update in the cloud, making it even easier to jump into the latest content from the supernatural adventure without a single download or more storage space needed. It leads the way for GeForce NOW bringing native touch control to the game, coming soon.
There’s even more to explore with three new games joining the GeForce NOW library this week.
Take It to the Next Level in Toronto
The forecast is looking cloudy in Canada.
A new GeForce RTX 5080-powered GeForce NOW server is coming to Toronto, expanding service in the region and bringing dedicated cloud gaming performance closer to local members. The new server will roll out within days, giving more players access to top-tier cloud gaming across Canada.
Ultimate members can stream across PCs, Macs, handhelds, mobile devices, TVs and more with GeForce RTX 5080-class power in the cloud. Enjoy up to 4K resolution and beyond on supported ultrawide displays, up to 120 frames per second, plus NVIDIA DLSS, ray tracing and NVIDIA Reflex technologies.
Bring on the ‘999 Nights’
Reality bends — on any device.
Step into the surreal world of NTE: Neverness to Everness with the NTE Version 1.2 “999 Nights” update.
This version introduces a massive gameplay evolution, plunging players into an immersive, tabletop-inspired fantasy role-playing game on the Warren Continent — a new permanent game mode featuring its own dedicated progression system.
This narrative and mechanical expansion is elevated by the debut of two powerful characters, Shinku and Iroi, alongside an unprecedented fashion upgrade featuring a sweeping collection of 19 new character outfits.
To top it off, exploration gets a high-octane upgrade with Draco, a revolutionary new motorcycle vehicle, making this version an absolute playground for combat strategy, stylish customization and high-speed urban traversal.
Plus, GeForce NOW will soon be rolling out native touch controls to NTE: Neverness to Everness, which will make it even easier to explore the city’s mysteries from supported mobile devices.
Look for the game in the GeForce NOW app to seamlessly jump between devices and continue the adventure — no downloads, storage space or expensive additional hardware required.
Embark on Expanded Adventures
The journey continues in Granblue Fantasy: Relink with the Endless Ragnarok expansion. Known for its dynamic combat, diverse roster of Skyfarers and thrilling online co-op, Relink returns with fresh story content as mysterious beings known as the Ragnalia threaten the Zegagrande Skydom. Strange gateways, powerful new foes — including the mighty Beelzebub — and fresh challenges await across the skies.
The expansion also introduces additional ways to play, including summon abilities that add another layer of combat strategy, co-op quest tiers and a solo mode filled with unpredictable encounters. Master traits offer more opportunities to customize favorite characters, giving both longtime Skyfarers and newcomers plenty of reasons to take flight.
Jump into the latest action with the following games to play this week:

As GeForce NOW continues to expand, so does the community discovering cloud gaming.
One new Ultimate member summed up their first impressions:
“Finally caved and got GFN Ultimate… and wow.”
Another longtime PC gamer shared how GeForce NOW completely changed their perspective after years of skepticism, calling it “a good alternative” for casual players and encouraging others to “try the one month and upgrade to the yearly before the sale ends.”

Title: No Man’s Sky developer Hello Games celebrates 10-year anniversary

I feel surprisingly emotional today. Ten years ago, on 9th August 2016, PlayStation Travellers across the universe set foot on their first alien planet in No Man’s Sky.
The first words from their exosuit rang out in their helmet: “Hazard protection active”.
Perhaps you were there ten years ago, or perhaps you joined later. All around the universe, other Travellers have woken up on countless other planets, light years apart from each other. They took their first steps on their first planet and brought a new unexplored universe into existence together.Since then, millions of players have made No Man’s Sky their home, built insane bases, built communities, made friends, and created custom ships that look like everything from Spongebob Squarepants to entire Cathedrals.
Play Video
Over the last decade, the No Man’s Sky players have joined us in another type of journey as we grew, expanded and deepened what No Man’s Sky could be. With now 40 major updates, all free, we have expanded our sandbox universe with base-building, exocraft, settlements, mechs, pets, living ships, expeditions and rebuilt the universe several times over. On PlayStation we introduced support for PSVR, then PS5, and then PSVR2. Allowing players to immerse themselves in the universe in much deeper ways.
PlayStation Travellers have been there since the dawn of this new universe; it’s kind of our Big Bang moment! Since then, tens of millions of Travellers have spent hundreds of millions of hours exploring and sharing their discoveries and the universe is more vibrant now than it ever has been. Voyagers released last year saw more players than we’ve had since launch… and still, all these years later players have explored less than 1% of the planets in No Man’s Sky.In a similar way our small team feels we have a lot left to explore in what No Man’s Sky can be. In the background we are busy cooking on our next game Light No Fire, and big things for the future of No Man’s Sky. More will follow! Our journey continues.

Title: Celebrate 30 years of Quake with a brand-new episode, available today
Date: Thu, 06 Aug 2026 18:15:30 +0000
Link: https://blog.playstation.com/2026/08/06/celebrate-30-years-of-quake-with-a-brand-new-episode-available-today/
In 1996, id Software smashed through to another dimension – in one sense of the word, pioneering first-person shooters in the third dimension with the release of Quake, and in another, hurtling players feet-first into Quake’s otherworldly realm – a place beyond our reality where kinetic combat and a moody eldritch setting took FPS players to new heights.
30 years later, Quake has inspired countless hours played and frags tallied locally or online in Deathmatch, not to mention real-world connections and a major role in the rise of FPS esports with QuakeCon, North America’s largest LAN party (also celebrating the big 3-0 this year!). To ring in the 30th anniversary of Quake, just in time for the 30th anniversary of QuakeCon, MachineGames, in collaboration with id Software, return to bring you a brand-new episode for the iconic FPS:
Play Video
Available today as a free update for Quake on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4, Dawn of the Machine features a full 19-map campaign accompanied by a brand-new soundtrack and Deathmatch map.
Dawn of the Machine is a celebration of Quake’s history and influence on the developers at MachineGames and id Software. Following the team’s work on Indiana Jones and the Great Circle: The Order of Giants DLC, Lead Level Designer Andrew Yoder at MachineGames approached the studio’s Game Director Jerk Gusfafsson about an expansion for Quake. Gustafsson, Yoder and the rest of the team that worked on similar projects – dubbed internally as Quake Club – set forth three major goals for what would become Dawn of the Machine.
First and foremost, of course, was celebrating Quake’s 30th anniversary. “We wanted to create something that felt authentic to the spirit of the original game: Horror! Action! Madness!” says Yoder. As such, players will face deadly twists on familiar entries from Quake bestiary such as the Rocket Ogre, Demo Dog, and Blood Shambler, rising to the challenge with new weapon variants like ricochet-blasting Laser Cannon and the lightning-infused Super Axe for classic, fast-paced Quake carnage.
The second goal the team pursued was giving veteran Quake players a new experience. Previous Quake episodes released by MachineGames alongside id Software, such as Call of the Machine and Dimension of the Machine, featured a traditional hub structure which reset the player’s progression between major areas. Instead, Dawn of the Machine has players battle through a continuous episode with continuous progression, which according to Yoder provided the team with “a challenge, requiring much more coordination and iteration to create.”
To set the stage for its design, Dawn of the Machine has players back in the boots of Quake’s battle-hardened protagonist Ranger as he escapes an illusory dimension where time folds back onto itself. As the looping cycle of time progresses, so too will players as they discover ways to break the loop, uncover upgrades to their health and ammunition supplies and eventually take down The Nightmare Machine, the source of Ranger’s planar prison. “Nothing you see can be trusted,” says Yoder, “but there is a path to break through the illusion, defeat the schemes of the outer gods and escape.”
An early boss battle concept (left), plus early level plans (right) for what would become The Matriarch of Decay. Both underwent significant iteration during the production of Dawn of the Machine.
The third goal in developing Dawn of the Machine was allowing the multifaceted and multitalented team at MachineGames and id Software to exercise their skills collaboratively on a smaller project compared to a modern AAA video game project. Some members of the Quake Club have made their own maps since the game’s release in ‘96 while others, including Yoder, have joined in more recently, making Quake Club a place for anyone on the team to contribute something to the project.
“Quake Club has always been an opportunity for the team to learn and have fun,” says Yoder, adding that high-quality modding tools and Quake’s relative visual simplicity to the photorealism of modern day AAA titles allow team members to pitch in their expertise, even for tasks normally outside their area of specialization.
As one example, Dawn of the Machine’s new soundtrack came about from an offer from Christian Plogfors, Advanced Level Designer at MachineGames. In addition to contributing two levels to the episode, Plogfors created a soundtrack with a dark, ambient tone expertly suited to the trippy, ethereal world of the expansion. “Christian proceeded to make a fantastic set of tracks that give the episode its own identity,” says Yoder. “The whole episode is so much stronger thanks to his contribution, stepping outside his normal role and bringing his other skills and passions to serve the project.”
Reflecting on 30 years of Quake, Yoders says the opportunity to make Dawn of the Machine has been a privilege. “The team here owes a lot to Quake and its legacy,” he says, “Quake Club and our work wouldn’t exist without the wider Quake community and our friends at id Software.”
Title: Ghost Recon Wildlands: Last Rites – Everything you need to know
Date: Thu, 06 Aug 2026 16:00:48 +0000
Link: https://blog.playstation.com/2026/08/06/ghost-recon-wildlands-last-rites-everything-you-need-to-know/
Ghost Recon Wildlands: Last Rites is a major free update out now on PS4 and PS5. It revitalizes the game with new content, including a thrilling linear story mission, gameplay customization features, 4K and 60 FPS on PS5 and PS5 Pro, and more. To learn more about what you can expect, we spoke with Ubisoft Bordeaux’s Creative Director Olivier Leonardi and Live Strategy & Analytics Director Yossef Benzeghadi in a new interview.
Play Video
Wildlands launched nearly a decade ago. What can you tell us about the community still engaging with the game?
Yossef Benzeghadi: Wildlands is a beloved gem within the Ghost Recon community, and taking down the Santa Blanca Cartel is fondly remembered. Either Solo or up to four players co-op, it’s a unique blend of open world and a fun immersive tactical military third person shooter that really stood the test of time.
Back in the day, I was part of the Wildlands live team, and we really took the time to picture all the gameplay behaviors, player profiles, and playstyles we could see emerging in the game from the whole community. It acted as our golden compass throughout postlaunch. It led to the release of various fan-favorite content, still available today of course, such as our challenging Ghost Mode, or multiple Clancy-verse missions featuring Splinter Cell or Rainbow Six Siege.
There was one key element that really stuck to me to this day – a group we initially called “Sandbox Players.” To be honest, at first, we did not really understand what the heck they were doing in our Bolivian Wildlands. Digging more, and more, notably thanks to community interviews and data-informed playtests, it finally clicked: they were role playing, ranging from cooperative mil-sim to simply adding extra optional layers of challenges on top of the game just for fun, taking hours to complete one mission perfectly. We had tons of players leveraging everything the game had to offer to transcend their gameplay experience to the next level.
The level of customization and the overall freedom of choice the game offers were praised all around and for us that’s one of the main reasons players are still engaging with Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands today. With Last Rites, we are following up on that legacy, and there’s never been a better time to jump in.
First, break down the features you’re adding in Last Rites, and why you added them.
Yossef: First, and by popular demand, we are very happy to confirm 4K and 60 FPS on PS5 and PS5 Pro.
To allow even more flexibility for role play fans and to bring more accessibility and freedom of choice to everyone, we are also adding various new settings to experiment with. With our new Ghost Parameters in the game’s Options menu, you can enable instant death or limitless revives, choose to have one or two primary weapons, and decide whether you keep remaining unused ammo when reloading or not. With our new World and Session Settings in the game’s Lobby page, you control the world itself. From the weather and time of day to alarms and jammers and even the rate of enemy patrols, you can craft your very own experience. You can even enable friendly fire in co-op, either to enhance realism, or allow some light PvP role play scenarios with your friends should you want to. We are also expanding existing categories from the Options menu with increased player agency. HUD and UI are more customizable than ever, and our new Difficulty settings now allow players to deep dive and tweak various elements such as Enemy Perception, Endurance, Vehicle Breakability and much more.
Then, there’s Last Rites itself. It’s a brand-new story-driven mission you can jump into right away. Set in a darker, more oppressive Bolivia, the Ghosts enter a region controlled by Los Penitentes, a new fanatical cult united by faith, sacrifice, and violent justice. Coming from all walks of life, its members turn the environment into a constant threat, drawing the Ghosts into a tense narrative of betrayal and moral ambiguity. They are led by an enigmatic new foe, La Llorona.
In addition, we’ve added tons of customization for your Ghost character and teammates, and many weapons and equipment have been unlocked for free, including previously unreleased camos and unobtainable challenge rewards. All Ghost War PvP classes can now be unlocked for free in the in-game store alongside many other items. And yes, we are adding some new Character Smith items to celebrate Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon 25th Anniversary, with a mysterious Operator Skin you unlock by completing Last Rites. A special thanks to the talented team at Ubisoft Bordeaux who made it all possible.
Finally, PlayStation Plus members can get their hands on a brand-new exclusive Iconic Skin of La Llorona, unlock the powerful P416 Micteca, and embrace their presidential chic with the new 4-SHUR Blue Leader Sunglasses.
Last Rites has been created in part due to that community feedback. How did you actually gather and prioritize that?
Olivier Leonardi: We met our community leaders and had a very open conversation with them. The goal was to turn raw community feedback into actionable insights that improved player experience while supporting the game’s core principles. We did so across multiple channels, structured it into themes, and prioritized based on player impact, intensity, and alignment with several player profiles. We know that a large part of our community are avid role players, so we crafted some of the features around their requests.
Yossef: Working on Last Rites was quite an archaeological ride. Very early on the project, we broadly shared all insights and knowledge we gathered on Ghost Recon Wildlands during its postlaunch at the time, which was extremely valuable for the team. It served as a mirror to reflect on what we could do and explore on Last Rites, a vision which we fine-tuned over time thanks to those precious community discussions we had that Olivier mentioned. Notice we have been talking a lot about role play so far; this is the prime example of something we would have loved to explore further back in the day and are very happy we could prioritize now. At the same time, and for the same reasons, we know a lot of our players just love well-crafted and story-driven missions, and that’s why we are also delivering on that front with Last Rites.
Talk to us about the new story content – Where did La Llorona come from, conceptually?
Olivier: La Llorona has become an untouchable icon, a resurrected arbiter of justice, revered by the Bolivian people almost as a saint. Gathering devoted followers to her cause, she compels them to wear masks, erasing their individuality and demanding absolute obedience. These disciples, known as Los Penitentes, act as the ruthless executors of her will, delivering merciless retribution to anyone connected to the events that sealed her fate.
We wanted this new antagonist to be quite dark and complex, but also someone that was deeply wounded, betrayed by the people she loved and trusted. La Llorona survived, but survival came at a cost. The betrayal destroyed her sense of belonging, leaving her suspended between who she was and what she’s becoming. Her vengeance isn’t just directed outward; it’s a way to reclaim control, to make sense of that pain, after what she experienced. She becomes a force of raw justice and destruction.

The mission is described as “unsettling” and the narrative shifts as players progress. How far did you push the tone, and why did you want to go darker this time?
Olivier: We wanted to introduce this new mission as a very standard incursion, putting players back into Nomad’s boots, leading the Ghosts to do what they do very efficiently, but things quickly turn into something else; the familiar Bolivian environment becomes weird and the Ghosts start witnessing the wrath of La Llorona, aiming at anyone who might be accountable for what happened to her, especially the corrupt Bolivian government and its armed wing: Unidad. The more the Ghosts advance in her territory, the more they discover her twisted personality and how devoted her disciples are. Through different documents and audio recordings scattered across the world, players will be able to discover more about her goals and what she represents for the Bolivian people.
Predator content returns with this update.

What do you hope players take away from Last Rites – is there a single experience or moment you’re most proud of?
Olivier: I think the moment at Varga’s villa, the reveal of La Llorona with her weeping widow mask, the confrontation with her Los Penitentes cultists, and what Nomad discovers there is both a strong gameplay and story moment. That changes everything for Nomad, and he’s confronting Emily Price, his CIA handler, trying to understand what causes this brutal transformation.

Update 10th August: Seems I may have been naive about this one! While there's no AI disclosure on the full Steam page for The Carcass, there is a disclosure on the separate store page for the demo. Here's the disclosure in full.
The entire vision, design, and core structure of this game are the result of human effort. AI tools were used strictly as a coding assistant during development—to speed up programming, debug, and optimize performance. This project is the result of a year of hard work; it was not 'generated' with a few simple prompts.
Disclosure aside, there are a bunch of Steam reviews of the demo accusing the developer of using generative AI to create the game's writing and art. I've mailed PiqFocus for further details.

I don’t know whose dreams Memoirium warps into action-RPG soulslike levels - it may not even be the player character’s - but whoever they are, they need to lay off the post-10pm Babybels. Besides being filled with chair-wielding thugs and hornfaced monsters, this blocky sleeprealm is lousy with the kind of shattered fantasy geometry that could send an innocent dodgeroller tumbling fatally off a hundred-foot-high-ledge. Also, the ledge is a giant sword.
Such was just one of my deaths in Memoirium’s generously proportioned demo, which is available now on Steam ahead of the game’s launch this Thursday. Even in these introductory stages, it’s clear that the subconscious you’re stuck in probably doesn’t belong to a contented vicar, opening up with a void-ravaged cemetary before routing you across a crumbling statue into a cultish school. Mundane respite, however, is available through Memoirium’s unusual take on bonfire rest spots: a bedroom that, resources permitting, you can furnish and decorate to your liking.

Title: This week in PC games: GoldenEye returns (sort of), plus janky arcade football, ballpoint cities, and a game about keeping the monsters inside Area 51

This week in PC games: too much horror! And not the kind related to graphics card prices, stinky corporate acquisitions, or the general corrosion of all that is real and good. There are a lot of horror games, I mean. I do like horror games, but I'm easily deadened by them - I need an apple-cheeked platformer or two to reset my gauges, between soul-harrowings.
Besides, if the weekly new game round-up skews too hard towards any one genre, the Maw gets acid reflux, and the last time that happened, it resulted in Jupiter's Great Red Spot. Fortunately, there are a few sweetie-pie city sims and novelty sport games knocking around, to lower the pH values. Let's get stuck in without further ado. Read more
Title: If you drove yourself mad building computers in Minecraft, Pight's redstone-inspired puzzling is an affordable palate cleanser

If you're 1) in the mood for a soothing and affordable 2D block-shoving puzzler, and 2) have many memories of building frightful hydraulic slaughterhouses in Minecraft, then perhaps Pight is for you. Created by Turkish devs Mindlabor, it's about using pistons, dynamite, mystic portals, electricity blocks, and other cuboid fauna to move a lightbulb block onto a power source.
It takes open inspiration from Minecraft's redstone - an in-game substance that conducts power and thus, allows for the creation of preposterous industrial machines and even functional computers. The addition of redstone to Minecraft back in 2010 contributed to the rise of a whole genre of PC automation games. Playing Pight gives me a corresponding feeling of vertigo, though it's soon evaporated by the balmy straightforwardness of the puzzling – no need to worry about Endermen saboteurs in this one. Here's a trailer. Read more
